I do not see how the coop have made it impossible for it be returned.Have they said they wont return it?

The Manager was called,I doubt she is in collusion. You are already pre-supposing they may lie.You are putting the cart in front of the horse. You cant legislate for everything, though I agree their treatment of you was rude in refusing a receipt.

If the note is returned to the Co-op if the bank have tested the note and found it to be legal how will they return it with no record of who gave them the note?

P.s, i have a wounderful imagination. But i am also a realist. I know there are people out there who are dishonest (not saying that this is the case, just that it is possible in general), i think to believe knowbody would take advantage if everyone knew this information would be silly. Does everyone hand back change if they have been given the wrong amount? ever been charged the wrong price (lower) and not said a word?

People lie, people steal, etc etc to not believe this is a possibility in general i believe would take a far better imagination than i have,

You are obviously an optimist, I however am extremely cynical!

It helps both parties to issue a receipt.

    Scenario 1: -

Cashier takes £20 note claims its fake then swaps it for a fake she has in their possession. No-one can prove it as no receipt has been issued with serial number on signed by both parties.

    Scenario 2: -

BOE concur note is fake yet OP's friend demands CO-OP to prove that the note that has been tested is the one she actually gave to cashier...... they cant obviously!

Great way of getting fake notes changed for real ones though.

I could say any trader, when handed a note could swap it for a fake. But does it happen all the time-NO.

Of course no one can prove that either.

Of course I will eat my words when the Op comes back claiming she has been scammed-no doubt she will also name the branch then?

well, taking the customer details seems to save a lot of problems e.g.
    1. Stops the customer disputing the note isn't the same one (seriel number written down)
    2. Stops people knowingly handin them over (if details are taken repeatedly)
    3. Helps the police locate people passing fake notes on purpose
    4. Gives the customer the chance to recieve the money back
    5. Stops the Co-op pocketing the money if it's legal
    6. Would deter would be cashiers 'scamming'
    Etc etc.

I am not disagreeing they could have been given a receipt.
I am saying you are already accusing them of deception and theft before there has been any confirmation or denial.

No criminal tendering fake notes is going to give their address..

"Please can we have your name and address?"
    "Why"
"This note you have given us is fake and you may know it"
    "Of course,delighted to"

    yeah..right..what planet are you on..

I have never actually implied that the Co-op or it's staff have been a part of any deception.

My main concern was that they could not conclusivly prove the note was fake, and wanted the note properly tested so that should it be real it would be reutrned to my friend, which they made it impossible to do.

I did however agree and suggest that there is a possibility within the industry for people to take advantage of this.

and your lower comment is right. Knowbody passing fake notes would hand over their name and address. So, if it was well known thats what happens i believe there would be fewer people willing to 'risk it'. A preventative measure.

    If taking details was standard:

Those who really didn't know have a chance at getting there money back

Those stupid enough to hand there details in will have the police on their back

Those who refuse to give details will look rather odd and will not want the attention (preventative)

I see you have edited your post now..

I would be going back there, and demanding to know how they had confirmed the note was fake. Then take it from there.

I added the bit on the bottom in my edit.

They originally confirmed the note was fake by running the 'special pen' over it at the till point.

since then i do not know. They refused to discuss what would happen with the note after it was removed from my friend. (as the managers refused to speak at all)

The Co-op lady who took my complaint did not call and is out of the office until friday.

Going into the store will not help at this point i don't think as it's above the managers now and they clearly didn't want to be involved in the first place

  • This is an interesting thread. A couple of years ago I received a counterfeit £20 once in cashback in the supermarket I worked in, then after work went for a drink at a pub across the road. When paying for a round the barman disappeared for ages, then came back with a manager and said they believed the note was counterfeit.

Obviously I was quite upset - £20 is a lot for a skint student! - but they were very professional about it. The details were written down and signed by both parties, and they kept the note and reported it to the police etc. I went into work the next day, showed the note to my manager and told them to contact the pub if they didn't believe me. Result - they gave me £20 :)

But after that I did realise that I had never received any information about what do to with a counterfeit note if a customer gave me one, other than common sense telling me I would get a manager involved. He didn't seem too clued up on what to do either, tbh I think they just gave me the money to keep an employee happy. I think it is definitely a grey area in a lot of shops, and they just kind of wing it.

I agree. There seems to be a black hole in the legislation/procedure. Very odd
