If they do decide to give it back. Ask them to prove that it is th actual note that was taken off your friend, which I'm sure they cannot. This proves the point that she should have been given some sort of recognition of the confiscation of the note they took.
Because as was rightly pointed out earlier what's to stop the manager or any of them switching the note.
Good luck! Please keep us updated.0 -

First possible scam, to confiscate a legit note and claim it was forged. Second part of scam, to return a fake note.
I think the coop have left themselves wide open to bearing the loss ...Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Well the problem is this is perfectally possible. And how on earth do i prove it. I can't because they refuse to provide any record of the transaction.
Surely this can't be right. The Bank of england said they could only 'advise'. Is this a huge great big black hole in legislation?I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!0 -

As for the BoE using the word 'advise', of course they don't have power to regulate how the coop runs its retail operation. I think, however, 'advice' from the BoE will be quite persuasive.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Phone call to the police
Advised that the Co-op should have provided a reciept and there is no good reason not to. The Co-op will hand the note to the bank and then they will pass this onto the police and advised that unless the Co-op play ball there is no way of tracng the £20 Note. Advised i make formal complaint with the Co-op (and she was sorry)
Help from BoE
I have provided a statement and the receipt. They will be approaching th Co-op on a national scale to speak about the policy in relation to counterfit notes.I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!0 -
