I don't think your quite understandin the thread a receipt was wanted incase the £20 note wasn't fake in that matter there is no reason be it legal or otherwise that the person cannot be refunded the £20 that was taken.

Yes if its a fake its understood that it can't be returned. The shop won't be £20 down as it was never taken as payment for anything it was sieezed.

Totally correct. As i tried to explain to the customer service lady running a pen over the note is not 100% accurate in whether the note is forged or not (even the lady i phone at the bank of england said the same) and therfore the note should/must be tested more accuratly (by the bank)

If the £20 is real, it will be returned to the Co-op and will stay there as their refusal to take my details or give written proof it was taken means they will not be handing it back.

I also think the situation has been dealt with in the most appauling manner. Never have i had managers rolling their eyes at me, refusing to discuss what i see as a perfectally reasonable request (i was not rude, as they didn't give me chance lol) and then rinning ahead of myself to 'warn' them about my call.

If anything this is how NOT to deal with customers

could th op clarify if they actually received their goods.. or was the £20 just taken?

If you did not receive anything in return i cannot see how your point is valid McKneff. i am not saying your wrong.. but I just cant see how they can without an audit trail just take someones money, because thats what it is until proven to be counterfeit and say "sorry cant give you that back"

Why would they take your details?? I thought this was apparently your friend? They are right to refuse to speak to you as it has nothing to do with you!! Or was this really about you all along?

Was this the Co-operative Group, i.e. the one with its customer services in Manchester or was it a regional co-op, with its head office somewhere else?

The reason I ask, is that you may be able to get through to someone more senior who could assist.

Sorry McKneff but are you just saying this because it is the co-op, if you called at a random small shop or market stall and they did this I couldn't see you or anybody else just letting them keep the note without any argument unless they already knew thart it was a fake and there is no indication at all that OP's friend believe it to be a fake.

My friend had to pay for her goods with other money (so they took the £20 from her, then she had to pay for her shopping on top)

I may trip up and say i/me because when i telephoned the customer service people i spoke as if i were her (some people are not so good on a telephone, the reason i'm helping is i have a little more nouse on the topic)

My friend did not no the note was a fake (if it is) and handed it over in good will. My basic principle is that the co-op cannot deem this not a fake on the basis of a pen. It needs to be properly tested.

I rang the Trading Standards based on the advice of the lady at the Bank of England and he says it's a strange one lol

Going to now call Community Legal Service's on his reccomendation.

I cannot see that the legislation around this totally fails to protect the consumer.

I am really bothered by this thread, I think the way OP friend has been treated is borderline illegal.. just because they are the "Co Op" doesnt mean they can just take your money..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just spoken to my OH who is a dc.. he has said that IF he seizes what he believes to be fraudulent money he would have to obtain details from the person and there would be an audit trail. Its is his personal opinion only that they have behaved inappropriately especially as if the note is fraudulent, then the police will not know where it came from and if its not, then how on earth are they going to return it to the rightful owner.

He has suggested you DO visit your local police station and ask them to politely intervene
