There was a cucumber question earlier. You can store cucumbers on the plant. Just chop half of a cucumber off instead of the full cucumber. The plant heals the cucumber over, leaving the other half fresh.

I read that and couldn't help thinking 'wow, isn't nature amazing'? Thanks tomterm8.

    Thanks Viva.
I think I just have the habit of questioning assumptions, because I want to believe that the things I highlighted shouldn't matter.:)

But then the philosopher in me backtracks a little, because to many these things are important. My cameroonian friend is phenomenally proud of his african heritage for example. My friend from barbados, who has been in birmingham all his life, is tremendously proud of being black. I recall a mutual friend met him for the first time. Mate B announced when I next saw him "Oh, I met your mate A the other day!" I replied that was nice. Mate B said "yeah, you never mentioned he was black".

It never occurred to me, because I see him as a friend, not a black man...:o

    I'm confusing myself somewhat.:o

My brother's wife has a sister with the same name as me, but not the same colour skin. When talking to their kids, my bro and sil have always referred to us as "white Aunty Lydia" and "black Aunty Lydia". When I first heard it, it felt a bit weird to me, un-PC and "should they really be saying this?" kind of feeling. Then I thought, well, I'm not personally offended by it, and I assume the other Lydia isn't offended by it either, and my nephews, being mixed race themselves, are hardly likely to consider either "white" or "black" pejorative. And it is the most obvious way to distinguish between us, so why not?

Since then, both of us Lydias have had sons with the same name. I've never asked if my brother's family say "white cousin X" and "black cousin X" but it wouldn't surprise me.

PS Lovely to see you again lir. :hello:

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Here's the willow man for those that haven't seen it: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vLbMuPkqGIw/SDgh3xHsI2I/AAAAAAAACZY/bY6u3GvvLW8/s400/463000014_3ae556be90.jpg

And here's the scaffolding it took: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/1607295.stm

The first willow man cost £15k, but he was set alight by arsonists. Lorra muneh!!

3 weeks' work to make him, expected to last 3 years. Lorra looniez with cheque books!

"The Willow Man project was funded by a grant from South West Arts, the local authority and Sainsbury's supermarket."

pfft... South West Arts... get proper jobs!

I wonder what gave them that idea

    Hello :).

I've missed you lot a bit............

Welcome back lir. Glad everything is sorting out now and you will have a bit more time to yourself. :)

I'm pretty busy myself atm, what with work and home stuff. Busy decorating and trying to fit in a bit of space to go away too! DS has gone off to uni.

It all takes up time.... sigh!!

I am leaving mine now to develop seeds.

Never had any luck with that, personally. We store pea and bean seed, and have had some luck with leeks, and onion, but as a rule we buy most seed in.

Am considering digging new beds, but I think I may have left it too late in the year. Autumn is here with avengence, but there is a lot to do in the garden, and very little time.

I have planted 270 daffodils in the grass to naturalise, though.

    Welcome back LIR!!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Here's one tree sculpture, maybe not all done with a chain saw, which used to be 250m from my house....

Just realised, no scale, but the daffodils show it's quite large!

    Awesome, straight out of LOTR.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Tablet I'm sure I've had. I'm not particularly fussed about that or fudge though. ATM I have a batch of apple/blackberry/elderberry jelly on the hob, but it won't reach setting temperature. I'm starting to despair of it. :(

Squab dies, but at lest had a quiet death. The feral cats here eat a lot of pigeon (probably what happened to the parent) and I reckon a quiet death nicer than a cat one. I put the body back out for the feral cats though.

Today disappeared....we went to feed ducks as a lunch time treat, then got side tracked by exterior paint sample pots. We didn't achieve anything much here today and I didn't finish my standard chores either. Our summer field is an odd shape and clearing the horse poop from it takes HOURS partly because time is always waster trying to decide which direction to go in. Its a surprisingly nice job, and very valuable. One gets to enjoy the views and spend observing the horses and the dairy cows (atm we have weaned calves over the fence line. DH got two dodgy water troughs mended, a huge burden of turning a metre on/off daily for refills s now gone.
