Agreed on the public to pay for it bit, but a journey down the M5 would be less fun without the stuff that's there. The willow person is.....well... something in a very nothing area, but much more fun are the camels and the dinosaur, which cost the public nothing.
I think the dinosaur was better when he was in the trees on the northbound side, but perhaps someone thought he was too subtle, so they shifted him into a more prominent position, southbound.
If people haven't seen these creatures, they'll possibly think I'm raving here!
Edit:...so here's a piccy

Here's the willow man for those that haven't seen it: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vLbMuPkqGIw/SDgh3xHsI2I/AAAAAAAACZY/bY6u3GvvLW8/s400/463000014_3ae556be90.jpg
And here's the scaffolding it took: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/1607295.stm
The first willow man cost £15k, but he was set alight by arsonists. Lorra muneh!!
3 weeks' work to make him, expected to last 3 years. Lorra looniez with cheque books!
"The Willow Man project was funded by a grant from South West Arts, the local authority and Sainsbury's supermarket."
pfft... South West Arts... get proper jobs!

I think the willow man was/is an ace piece of sculpture. Does anyone know if it's still around? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Whoops! Just realised that you quoted my first piccy before I removed it and edited down to a link, PN.
It was too big, though it looked fine on Google!
Yes Willow Man is still there. They built a moat around him after he was burned.0 -
There was a cucumber question earlier. You can store cucumbers on the plant. Just chop half of a cucumber off instead of the full cucumber. The plant heals the cucumber over, leaving the other half fresh.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

OK, so now I know about boutique hotels, I think the one I found is lovely ... but I can't afford nearly £4k to stay there in August for a week
Plus other costs.... call it £5k.
I never knew these places existed!0 -

I am leaving mine now to develop seeds. Trouble is, they are very shy seeders, so I may just end up with a load of sludge.
No swallows today. Saw two yesterday, heading south and not stopping. That's summer done & dusted....:(
But, hey, autumn isn't so bad.We had a frost last night and now it looks as if I'll have to harvest the squashes. It'll be fun finding out exactly how many are hiding in there, among the soggy leaves.
