    Hey you lot :)

While we're talking food (& surplus garden produce) just want to recommend a green tomato chutney recipe, its on (iirc correctly an allotment - .org? - site) 2nd listing on google i think... how lazy am i not just giving the link :o will look in a min.

Very good chutney :D Made loads at weekend but can't wait a month or 2 for my first taste so had a little bit with some cheddar (cheese!) earlier & can confirm it is amazing!

Got loads more green tomatoes- a good few batches worth- plus picallili to make- plus blackberries .... to jam?

    BUT NO JARS LEFT! :rotfl:

Any other good recipies with blackberries? We have had blackberry & apple crumble about 3 times per week for the last month :o what else can I do? Will do some jam but TBH the kids don't really like it and I don't eat breakfast .... and its not really victoria sponge worthy is it....

Must make the most of them. Can't imagine I have many more years left of telling the kids ' when I get home tonight I want at least 1 more big tupperware of scavenged berries waiting for me '

So innocent :) Daren't tell them I've ran out out recipies otherwise lord knows what else they'll find to occupy themselves  .....shameful memories of my 3pm-5pm activities are coming back to haunt me :A

Oh dear this post was only supposed to have been a link to a chutney recipe lol :)

    EDIT: Link!

    A message for Pastures...

You mentioned library services not being so good and the selection poor in your area. Hope you don't mind, but I had a look at services where you are to see if I could find a way to make it useable for you.

If you were in my region, I'd sign you up as disabled (the right code where I am for people with ASD). Where you are you need to get your form counter-signed by a professional, but it may be worth doing. You'd be able to reserve all manner of books, not just those in your local library, free of charge and get reduced rates for Inter-library loans from outside the county. You'd be able to do most things online and just pop in when you need to pick something up/return books, or if you feel like it, pop into the library and get an hour's free net access per day. Do you think that's something that might interest you?

I see your chutney recipe with this one. It tasted ready to eat from the pan before maturing.

Blackberry sorbet? I make a blackberry jelly and use it for victoria sponge. blackberry and elderberry wine is v drinkable.

and ask for jars on freecycle. Or work, or knock on neighbour's doors. People use more jars than they realise.

Another thing is if you have a food dehydrator (which is my new favorite toy) is fruit leather. Just make a puree of the fruit, spread it on some non-stick and dry it so it's a sweetie (think you can buy it in posh health food shops)

Thanks - OH plans to turn some of our green tomatoes into chutney too - seems to be a national problem?

Re blackberries, we too have a freezerful, for similar reasons - but no tips - afraid I've just been making crumbles and jelly too - not exactly a 'recipe' as such, but adding a load of frozen blackberries to raspberry/strawbelly jelly not only uses them up and adds vitamins, but also sets the jelly much quicker! Suppose you could do blackbery muffins, though I haven't tried it myself. Or trifle? Or 'coulis' on ice cream, if you're feeling posh?

Misskool thanks, might try that for my next batch, my aunt said about givng it a bit more of a kick (plus the kids won't scoff ti all if its spiced up a bit) :D

Carol I thought about muffins/ cakes but to honest I'm not a great baker :o Might try the sorbet idea- as I saw on Come Dine With Me- Big Brother (SHAME ON ME!) that sorbet is only fruit & sugared water?

Congrats on your move- didn't realise until couple days ago- hope you are enjoying your new home :A

    HOW TRUE THESE ARE

Live in a tiny room and pay £900.00 per month and have no hope of
    ever getting out.
    Justice for all we say.

Perhaps you are living in the outer regions, in the late Mr Dog's nursing home, a mile or three inside the M25, the smallest poky rooms (bed and bath and no more room because of the hoist to save nurses backs) the rate was 900 GBP; the nice suite rooms with a view over the garden and lake, not the car park, were 1200 GBP but these prices were PER WEEK

(For more details of Mr Dog's attempts to pay enough tax to bail out the rest of the UK, do a find on Mr Dog in the tax saving part of the forum)

I've learned how different London/SE is to the rest of the UK.

I used to just think it was similar to "round my way"

I think you can find some parts of central London, the home counties and "rose" land (rest-of-the-south-east) where living conditions are considerably worse than the rest of the country. The main problem is the way that young people are forced to set up home in a shoe box - and that is the rich lucky ones.

Cheapest non "social" property within 30 miles of central London?
(If to you it looks like 1930's industrial architecture, you could well be right.)

Green and Black seems OK, but all the food containing chocolate, like choc coated biscuits, choc cakes and the cheap and cheerful choc bars are a no-no. I do occasionally risk it to see and then regret it. Only been like this for about 18 months, so I still remember the taste of chocolate.

Have you tried diabetic chocolate? Don't know if it would make any difference but m-i-l gave me a bar of hers (Sainsburys own 'no added sugar dark chocolate') to try and I was surprised how nice it was.

Carob as a chocolate substitute used to be commonplace.... tried it, just out of interest, it wasn't smooth/chocolatey, but was OK ... and that was over 20 years ago, so probably better now.

Thanks Misskool for the link to a site full of recipes, and to SJay, whose recipe I've also copied.

Now I just have to wait for some rain and time-off for good behaviour. ;)

Diabetic chocolate is (IIRC) made to the same recipe as dog chocolates.

So if you have a diabetic relative, guess the easy way to be mse when buying them a gift...:D

Is the consensus here that tomato plants struck by blight are unsalvageable, & I'd be best picking off all the fruit now & hoping for the best?:(

Also, is there anything I can to to try to prevent it occurring next year? or is it a case of hoping for the best?:(

Thanks all. & thanks for the recipes from me too to sjay & misskool!:)
