I am a vegetarian and have been for 28 years. It isn't anything to do with animal welfare, though that can be a welcome impact as I don't like battery farming, just decided one day that the bits that I liked (burgers, sausages, bacon) were the most unhealthy and I wasn't that keen on the healthy stuff such as chicken breast. I still love the smell of bacon though.

I also try to substitute processed wheat products with wholewheat, particularly pasta which I eat a lot of.

Chocolate is the one food that I just can't compromise on. Love the stuff. Every year I trot off to Fortnum and Masons for a box of their handmade champagne truffles - the best chocs known to mankind - and believe me I've tried a lot. Yum...

I don't eat much beef, but I'm afraid we find it hard to avoid pork, as it is an alternative currency in this neck of the woods. ;)

Indeed, it was only last Friday that a payment pig arrived, all neatly packaged up in portions and ready for the freezer. It isn't very lean pork either, but then it doesn't taste like the awful stuff from the supermarket, that is.

    I suppose pork is semi-reddish? :o

I don't eat meat either but do eat fish and dairy. It's known as pesco-vegetarianism.

I try to eat sensibly in general (bar alcohol perhaps :o) and have increased my fruit consumption in recent months. :)

I snack on walnuts, brazils and oatcakes.

Today I've had two cold sausage rolls I found in the fridge ... and while I was in there I found some pasta I'd made 3 days ago so squirted some salad cream on that ... and there was a hard boiled egg I'd made 2 days ago. So, that was lunch and snacks.

For tea I had a couple of cheese/onion 'fishcakes' in breadcrumbs with some oven chips and frozen peas.

    I eat what's available :)

Edit: Oh and two chocolate fingers :)

Be careful with storing and reheating previously cooked food, especially rice.....
    Storing and reheating
There are a few things to remember when you are storing and reheating cooked rice and grains. This is because the spores of some food poisoning bugs can survive cooking.

If cooked rice or grains are left standing at room temperature, the spores can germinate. The bacteria multiply and produce toxins that can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Reheating food won't get rid of the toxins.

Therefore, it's best to serve rice and grains when they've just been cooked. If this isn't possible, cool them within an hour after cooking and keep them refrigerated until reheating or using in a cold dish.

You should throw away any rice and grains that have been left at room temperature overnight.

Don't keep cooked rice and grains longer than one day and don't reheat them more than once. Check the 'use by' date and storage instructions on the label for any cold rice or grain salads that you buy.

I'm always keen to get things cooled/boxed/lidded and in the fridge ... and to use them up soonest.

When I cook something I do extra and stick it in the fridge in lidded boxes so it's just there for the grabbing. So, I'll boil 4 eggs, not 1; I'll mash a whole 1Kg of spuds, not just 3 spuds.

A fridge buffet of assortments. :)

We eat whatever the garden throws at us currently so lots of tomatoes, beans and potatoes. In the winter, lots of chutney and whatever I've remembered to freeze. And whatever is on special.

We have takeaways when we're tired and grumpy from work.

It's strange how food (I'm such a food obsessed person) now appears to be a weapon of class distinction. Everyone needs to prove they eat better and healthier than the next person to be a better person. Most odd.

I think, for me, it's that I reached a point of appreciating my own mortality and took on board the need to look after my health / maximise my chances of reaching old age. Plus having a family made me evaluate the need for good nutrition.

When we're young, I think many of us think we're invincible and will go on forever, however we abuse our own bodies.

You'll all be highly amused to hear that this month the family is being fed on our 'tin hat stockpile', plus too many marrows/green beans (glut of both from the allotment).

When the Lehmans/Northern Rock etc !!!! hit the fan, I bought a few extra tins a week and stored them in the cupbard under the stairs, and...forgot about them. When we moved, we suddenly discovered about 100 rapidly going/gone out-of-date tins, plus a few dried goods. Don't wish to store them all again, so it's tins, tins, tins all the way now. :p

Handy, as after moving, we need a 'cheap' month. School asked for tins for the homeless, too, this month, rather handily.

Advice - is giving the homeless slightly out-of-date tins not the done thing? Or should I argue that if I'd feed them to my children (I am), then the homeless shouldn't be picky either?

I am finding it extremely difficult to take discussions on House Prices seriously.

I'll try talking about something I (and many others) have interest in, food.

I've recently stopped consuming red meat. It can lead to inflammation and cancer.

What foods do you avoid consuming and why?

I buy whatever reduced foods are on offer and freeze them to consume later...last week, we had chicken thighs which I had purchased for the grand amount of 30p, got a marinade for 50p, used some oven chips hanging about in my freezer (70p for a whole bag) and hey presto, a meal for 4 for less than a £2 (probably less than a £1 actually as there was only a quarter bag of oven chips left). On Sunday, our lunch consisted of a whole stuffed chicken which had been reduced to 99p, special offer potatoes, veg which I already had and value yorkshire puddings (yes I can make my own but couldn't be bothered!)

I avoid bread which has been opened for more than 1 day (I am weird), reheated food (told you I am weird) apart from stew, pasta apart from spaghetti as it makes me gag ( a left over from morning sickness days) and coffee...I cannot bear coffee, the mere smell of it and I am throwing up all over the place.

I also avoid all forms of spicy food...I don't like spicy things and I don't eat any greens although love carrots, potatoes, mushrooms and sweetcorn.

Fortunately, the boys will eat reheated food, bread that is more than 1 day old, spicy foods, all veg and pasta...but middle son likes coffee, he can only have it at my parents house as coffee is banned from this house.

Anyway, kids back to school yesterday and it was a last minute rush to get uniform organised as it has been a very tight few weeks (still waiting for the insurance to pay out for my late elder cat). I had luckily managed to get the shoes sorted out last week and most of the books for eldest sons summer work for his AS levels but still needed to get a new blazer for youngest (£28 blooming quid!) and new trousers for him too (shirts were new at the end of last term and still fit great).

Trousers woman (I get them from one person on Ebay as youngest is very particular about the 'feel' of clothes and he seems able to cope with these ones ok when we change over to new ones), had taken a late summer holiday break, so new trousers not here yet! Luckily he still fitted into the ones he had before the holidays but they needed a bit of a stitch in time
For middle son, I somehow managed to find a pair of trousers that had been new last term but had never been worn, so that saved me another £20 and his shirts are still fine (another late last term purchase) but his shadow striped shorts have seen better days so an order is in for them (why do uniform shops run out during the summer holidays when they know they are going to get more business, especially as they are the only place where these clothes can be purchased from...the shorts have been on order for the last 2 weeks!).

Now all I need to do is get eldest sons books ordered.....I've been doing one to two books a week to try to spread the cost but at least he doesn't need uniform anymore.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
