I went to see the fantastic Crowded House last night, at Symphony Hall.
They were brilliant.
They had a very intimate stage set up.
Their new songs sound wonderful. Niel Finn is one great frontman.
The band really appeared to be enjoying their show. It was a great evening. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Just come back - don't want to be too nice or anything, having tried to close this endless thread down.;)
But I noted your post and just wanted to send you my love and support. You know you'll get support here, emotional that is. Nothing else we can do. It's going to be really hard from hereon in and I want you to know I understand, having been there.
Will be thinking of you and the family.:(
wow, bouche. Thank you.
Believe it or no the nice people's support cn be wonderful.. I've watched it do wonderful things for people. Some of us really care.0 -
Yeah I know - I've been playing devils advocate I know. It's just such a loooong thread now and has been getting on my nerves (much like the Bulgarian one)
People talking about fluffy ducks after 2.5K threads gets my back up!!
Anyhow I meant what I said. I hope you're a tight family and will support eachother throughout, it's the most important thing and something I didn't have when I lost my Mum - you'll soon find out.
There is a thread on Bulgaria?
This aunt is dh's closest. She is very important to him: his own mother died some years ago and she has done lots of ''mother'' type things for him since. She was widowed less than a year ago: she is not old, just terribly unlucky.0 -
DH...''dear husband''. Most worried about cousin...for obvious reasons. she, aunt, is in her sixties.0

Bouche,I'm not offended at all. I'm grateful. And I'm glad that among the ducklings that annoy you saw and contributed to what the thread is,I believe, about.
Its been a tough day. There is a lot going on here....I just was grateful for a place to ''be''where I didn't have to get it right instantly under pressure.0 -

Very sorry to hear that LIR'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
misskool I believe you work in HE?
If so, I thought you may be interested in this article http://www.bis.gov.uk/news/topstories/2010/May/letter-to-vcs-and-principals which includes Vince Cable's letter to universities regarding reducing the deficit (&, it says, universities role within this). There might be a little more info for you here http://www.info4local.gov.uk/documents/publications/1601947It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
A lot of the things in that letter (recruitment and pay freezes etc) were already happening informally under labour.
Unfortunatly, I think research is likely to be cut, which is a rather idiotic thing to do. Research generally brings in more tax revenue in new products than it costs for the government to spending. It's like cutting the inland revenue budget... in broad terms, it saves money in the short term, but costs much more in the long term.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Couldn't agree more. What is worrying is that I anticipate we could see quite a few policies along this theme. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

My hope is that they don't cut expensive research. When DH did his PhD he was allowed to use £240k worth of electricity on experiments on a precursor to the large hadron collider (though part of his costs were met commercially). His PhD experiments are still widely cited. Sometimes we have to spend to learn (same issue US faces with the space program). Research in other subjects that add less to our collective knowledge and pushing forward the boundaries of science and technology is generally much cheaper.
As an aside, DH has turned out to be one of those people who can't leave a room without making sure he turns off the light, maybe he feels he's already used up his lifetime's allowance! Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
