Why didn't anyone point me in the direction of ebay before?

I have been asked out twice in the last twenty minutes:rotfl:

And here was me thinking all gamers were retiring types.

I may not make any money but it has certainly broadened my horizons.

LIR Second viewings and chats with planning office sound hopeful?

CT how about Siberia?...saw my brother today and he just came back from a gig this weekend and promoters took him to visit a huge dam. He says it's out of this world though has been to all parts a few time. It was in Bratsk
It's not touristy at all. I just read some links + seems Bratsk was very polluted and still has very high levels of mercury in the water....looks pricey to get there too...but was just an idea.:o

We have finalised the house/work plan so I may put the furniture on Ebay afterall.....rather than get a trader in.

Got to see both parents, brother and little nieces and nephews too so nice but I am so not looking forward to living back in the area...but parents are getting on so suits family to live back there .......and work of course.

    Hi Carol,

Here's my shortlist: Avignon (can go by Eurostar and the train journey is lovely, or fly and train in); Helsinki - watch the midnight sun from your own sauna on a little island in the harbour (well that's my romantic notion anyway), Lisbon (for a romantic side trip to Sintra), Strasbourg (doable by plane or train and very beautiful), and even though you rule out Spain the Basque Country is beautiful.

Tell me more - we'd vaguely thought Portugal. I don't even know what country Strasbourg is in - is it France? Sounds nice...

I do love Helsinki too; all Scandinavia, really - but from my memories it was rather expensive. Sort of romantic-ish; maybe a bit ex-Soviet, too?

We just had a weekend for a wedding in Helsinki. -16 and snow but OK.

    How about Poland? Eastern Europe?
Croatia .....I think when we finally get around to having a holiday, it will be Croatia.

We had a couple of weeks near Strasbourg a couple of years ago and my parents lived there for a few years. It's a lovely area in Alsace in eastern France (right on the border of Germany). The city itself is really nice, but it's right near the wine route and if you rent a car you could have an amazing day driving down the famous road through villages that all produce wine and have vinyards and merchants. Quite romantic too if you're looking for that type of thing. Each village on the route also has competition to have the most beautiful flowers (think Britain in Bloom on acid) which is also very pleasant.

The village of Obernai, around 15 miles south-west of Strasbourg is just stunning, and has some amazing places for food and drink. Google image the places Kayersberg or Obernai for a typical 'look' of the region.

My travel experiences is very boring.

Copenhagen x 2...one for a business trip, one for a speedway GP.
    Prague.....speedway GP
    Paris x 3 ...Disneyland Paris
Italy (stayed on Lake Garda but GP was about an hours drive away)....speedway GP
Spain...with my nan and when I was 14.
Belgium x god knows how many times....honeymoon, booze cruises etc.

    See, very boring.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Cleaver's given a great description of Strasbourg. I used to go there several times a year and its lovely. Great big Cathederal, lots of old buildings in the old town, can take trips up and down the river, the scenery around (particularly as you go into the Voges Mountains) is lovely.... The trick to getting a good value trip to Strasbourg is that you must book when the parliament isn't sitting. Hotel rates and flight costs double.

I don't think Helsinki feels ex-Soviet, but as a cheaper alternative you may try Talinn. I think Talinn is drop dead beautiful, though I understand its become a bit of a stag weekend getaway of late so may not be what you're looking for.

Bruges is very close and got missed off my initial list.

Lisbon is easy to get to. Cheap flights, good value hotels (even the expensive ones), a pretty city in itself with lots to see, you can listen to Fado and visit Sintra, which is sort of a mad little village of palaces and beautiful, whimsical buildings on a hill, the closest we've got here is Portmerion, but it's not that similar.
