I like what I've been hearing about Kia (especially the 7 year warranty) but dealerships are a bit thin on the ground and aren't they a bit iffy on the servicing front even though as I understand it, you can now legally have a vehicle serviced by any bona fide garage without it affecting the warranty ?

The servicing was pretty expensive at a few of the places I asked. We're talking £250-300 for first service. Well that's what I was quoted anyway. Another dealer was much more reasonable. Here is a good list of servicing costs that are pretty reasonable, at least for the Cee'd anyway.

You've just bought it, how do you know it's never failed an MOT?

Because I have the full history with the car now, not even any advisorys noted on the old mot's
I used to be me !! what happened

All you get with an MOT is a refusal to provide an MOT cert though. That could easily be binned, and the only way you'd find out about it though is through the computerised database online. So long as the repairs are done, and if advisories are sorted too you can get an MOT pass every year with no advisories. A very well maintained and serviced car should never have any problem passing MOT's straight off time and again :)

Re the how many will be running in 10 years comment, given that Kia offer a 7 year warranty on all their cars now (effectively up to a 8.5 year warranty if you buy one up to 18 months old second hand under their approved seconds scheme), I suspect quite a few will be around in 10 years :)
Certainly for the next 7 years or so virtually any of the current ones will still be roadworthy assuming they get yearly maintinance and avoid crashes :)

We went with a Rio about 6 years ago as we needed a new car, and it was either a second/third hand Astra type car, with 1-2 years warranty (and probably run ragged by a fleet driver), or a new Kia for the same money and the Rio has lasted remarkebly well (IIRC the only non service work has been one wheel hub, and the rear suspension bushes in December).

From memory the Rio's been costing about £200 a year for MOT/Service (main dealer), with the last one being about £300 because it included the cam belt change.

The Cee;d is a lot nicer than the Rio though, the extra £2k on the cost really shows imo.
We're almost certain to get another Kia if the pricing/warranty remain good.

I bought a Kia Carens 2.0ltr diesel about 9 months ago not pleased with car at all it was a gas/diesel guzzler giving me about 28 to the gallon the handbrake refused to hold and I took it back and had it done three times in nine months infact it rolled backwards into a parked car nearly pinning me between it and that wasnt on my way out of it it was when i was coming back to it only the hatch lid the 2 support pistons failed the same time and it came down and just missed my wifes head but credit where credits due Kia customer support was second to none. I think it was a jinx car couldn't wait to sell it, I have now :T No more Kia's
The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.

Glad that people finally learnt to be practical rather than badge snobs. :T
    Long warranty matters!

Both ranges have come a long way this past few years and they're now reasonably close to their european counterparts in terms of fit and finish and quality - plus they've been massively boosted by the scrappage scheme.

Its amusing that you refer to 'badge snobs' - i'd say they've attracted customers away from skoda, ford and vauxhall - hardly up there in the 'prestige' pecking order....

I run a garage business servicing and repairing cars. We see a reasonable number of Kia/Hyundai. There is no particular problem with the recent models. They are realiable and well built. Most of the technology is based on Mitsubishi - a good pedigree.

You can check a car's MOT history here.

it rolled backwards into a parked car

Foot operated parking brakes are pain in any car.
But how it can roll backward - even if parking brake failed?

Did you not put it into gear (in manual) or P (automatic) when parked?
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

The Kia Pride was a second run of the Mazda 121.

That was back in the early days of Kia UK.;)

That's a long time ago, not many of those still about. Stopped making them 10 years ago. The 121 was also made in South Africa and imported into the UK as a 'SAO Penza' - anyone remember them then?
