Daft Q maybe, but why is a breast better than a tub of SMA? I don't get it, considering the WHO always declare formula to be perfectly safe....?

Sorry - just trying to understand the fascination with BF....? Males point of view replies please, i.e. nothing too technical or gross! lol

I agree with fernlinbee- live and let live. I don't look down my nose at anyone (well no-one on here ). Everyone makes their own choices, but I am interested to read information on all these things, so I hope people won't stop posting links to information. It's always important to look at source as well as content when weighing up the validity of information- that's true of the internet, books, newspapers etc as everyone has an angle.... I might not agree with everyone's lifestyle choices, but I'm sure plenty of people don't agree with all of mine so c'est la vie.

NID.. SMA is the crappiest white slop in the world.. ALL the other brands are so much better.. and nothing beats farleys and Milupa... BUT.. not one of them has antibodies like breastmilk does that protects babies from illnesses and most importantly tummy bugs which can kill off part of the gut and cause death (necrotising enterocolitis) .. This is what causes death in many premature babies. It is also free.. and I am a cheapskate! no sterilising, no bottles to buy or make up, no getting out of bed inthe middle of a cold night to warm a bottle and feed a sprog. You don't have to listen to a screaming baby while milk warms.. tip out a boob and voila!

Oh.. and the bejooblies stay huge for so much longer..

I understand about the natural antibodies but come on please, don't make me give a biology lesson! I agree that whilst formula cannot emulate anything like a natural milk or the preservatives within said milk, formula is perfectly safe which is what i'm trying to establish.... kinda like a vegetarian eating fish, IYSWIM?

Breast milk has antibodies, it is quicker digested, there is no need to worry about everything being sterile and since it is made fresh each time, there is no risk of bacteria from the milk. It's also made for humans by humans so the proteins in it are available for use by the body straight away without having to be broken down first. And also it's free (unless you develop a pump addiction).

But I beleive that you go for what is best for the family unit as a whole rather than 'breast is best no matter what'. Everyone makes up their own minds on what to do that is best for their own families. If that's formula, so what? Nobody should feel guilty about not breast feeding, their are bigger things to feel guilty for (like feeding jars, Glam how could you you rotten *hides the cupboard full of Hipp and Heinze* mother!).

But then again, we don't have to click on links do we? I let my boys play violent video games so if someone posted a link to how damaging that is, I may click it, knowing I won't like it but I probably won't.

Of course it is or there would be a lot of very sick babies about.. so long as it is made up properly it is fine.

It 'may' be FF babies are heavier.. but it is made with milk for calves not milk for humans.. but it is better than watered down condensed milk babies used to get.. or goats milk.. Formula also has extra added iron so babies are unlikely to become anaemic, breastmilk is very low in iron so anaemia is common in BF babies weaned late.

I found SMA okay actually. It's what I used, bloody honked to high heavens though.

Pigpen, but on the flip side, you can kick your OH out the bed to go and do the midnight feed, whilst you snooze for longer.

My big fat Step Gran, only ever liked her kids when they were on the pap, after that she was totally dis-interested and she was one of those woman who make a big dramatic show about taking their boob out and feeding in public. She had minging boobs aswell, like dangling empty sacks. Very MSE though, because when the baby needed burped, she just shot them over her shoulder in place of a muslin....:rotfl:

Ah Beenie, I didn't know you smoked! I have nicotine gum in the cupboard if you wanted it? It tastes like butt to me. I also have those inhalers too, didn't like them either.
