Didn't read back on this thread and see that the smoking/ BF thing was a big deal! Ooops! I just thought beenie was saying she felt bad.

We def don't need another BF/FF debate we all know the for's and against's and it was our choice how to feed our babies.

At the same time I welcome information about any topic (even if I disagree/ didn't do it) and if you don't then don't click the link. Don't feel like you can't post on here any more feelie, we all have different opinions and I don't agree with a lot of stuff I read, but I don't let it bother me. I am comfortable with my parenting decisions so what others think doesn't really effect me or my DD.

    agreed xxxx

Susan DOH lol of course you dont know where I am lol, I am in Ashington in Northiumberland, thanks for the invite though :) maybe the next one. I didnt realise there was so many northerners lol
:rotfl: I did used to be known as "Psychic Susie". (Although it was actually a corruption of "Scientific Susie".)
You know, I REALLY hate when you post links from that ridiculous website. It's utter bias tosh.
    ...
Feely, I know you have a strong BF ethic and all sorts, but I have to bite my tongue everytime you post. Do you realise how bad you make others feel? Well you certainly make me question my parenting skills because clearly I fed my child poison and am setting her up for a life of lung cancer and recurring ear infections.

How would you feel if I started posting links to bias websites about "BF IS WRONG, FORMULA ALL THE WAY" I'm sure YOU wouldn't like it.

Smoking is bad, I know that, I don't need to see links that have no substance at all.

BF is ace, I know that, doesn't mean I should have to feel like crap because I didn't do it.

I really think you need to chill out on the BF thing, some of your comments are hair raising, BF isn't the be all and end all, it is just FOOD.

Yes, FOOD! I admire the lengths you went too to BF your child but the stuff you come out with, like no advertising on formula or bottles is just like !!!!!!, does it really effect you at all? You have your own choices, so why does it concern you if someone chooses to FF?

I've said my piece. I'm away to go and have a cig out my kitchen window now, hope Keira doesn't catch the croup
If you're interested in the science bit and how they work things out, I wrote a little bit about it here in the baby walker discussion. You do have to remember of course that they are looking at everyone who smokes and not just at the people who are very particular and careful about not exposing their child to it so it is an average. (Just like the baby walker studies would include people who were silly enough to leave their child in it all the time as well as those who used them in moderation.) Like with anything else, you can take action to minimise the risks which is obviously what you do.

In fairness to Feelie, she wasn't targetting or criticising you or anyone else - she only provided the link because somebody had specifically asked for encouragement not to restart smoking after her baby is born. Given what she was responding to, obviously the link she posted was going to be anti-smoking and talk about the potential harm it can cause. Since you are a smoker, you are bound to be sensitive to something like that but she didn't just post it out of the blue as a judgement on all smokers - she was trying to help someone. If she was posting links to kellymom unsolicited all the time then fair enough - that could be considered objectionable and antagonistic but if she is posting the links in response to someone to help them then perhaps it would be sensible just to ignore them since you know they will annoy you and is only posting them to help other people and not to antagonise/alienate/criticise/judge anyone.

Incidentally, although I am pro-BF and believe strongly in the benefits etc. etc. I do find it annoying the way that so many articles say things along the lines of, "If you formula feed, your child is twice as likely to grow green toe nails." etc. without reference to the likelihood of it happening. I also think that stating it that way round probably overstates the increased risk in people's minds because it is compared with the biological norm (BF) rather the societal norm (mostly FF) but when someone who FF reads it they are likely to imagine the relative risks with relation to the societal norm rather than the minority who were BF. I can see how that kind of wording can be upsetting and seem like an attack even though it is generally just intended as the stating of facts.

MFD!!! Am I right that you are a BSL signer? Can you tell me how you would sign names? If you can.. Would you just use the first letter of a name or are there set signs for names?? Christophers SALT makes a tapping gesture with the first two fingers curled, but I don't know if thats for 'pay attention' or 'Christopher'?
    I finger spell A L for Alice.

MFD - am fascinated with sign langauage how did you learn it? My younger brother is mostly deaf but grew up being able to hear so he can lip read, but I always thought BSL would be better than learning a foreign langauage.
I learned BSL twice but have never had any need to use it so have forgotten most of it.

Meanwhile, I'm going to say something that may or may not be controversial. I hate it when men say they're babysitting their kids. You can't babysit your own kids. It's just called "parenting".
Last November I went to a series of evening lectures and the first one I went to, someone asked me if OH was babysitting. *confused smilie* I just said, "No but anyway she's in bed so it's not like she's any work at the moment anyway." (And then had a rant to OH about it when I got home.)

I reckons there's probably about a 80/20 divide on this thread that looks down their noses and me and Buttons but i'm sure i speak for both of us when i say "meh"
Is anyone else wondering who is in the 80 and who is in the 20? I don't look down on anyone - we all make different choices based on our own circumstances and do the best we can and none of us get it right all of the time.
Daft Q maybe, but why is a breast better than a tub of SMA? I don't get it, considering the WHO always declare formula to be perfectly safe....?

Sorry - just trying to understand the fascination with BF....? Males point of view replies please, i.e. nothing too technical or gross! lol
Since you asked, I should point out that the WHO says formula is fourth choice after BF, mother's milk from a cup and donated milk. Formula is "safe" (as long as it isn't contaminated with melamine and doesn't accidentally have things left out of it as has happened in other countries) but isn't "best". But just because it is best on average doesn't mean it is always the best choice (or even an option) for everybody. If you were buying a car you might look at the safety test results before making your decision. All the cars would meet a certain minimum requirement but you would still want to have an idea of which were safer. Chances are you wouldn't pick the car which was officially the safest car because there would be other factors to consider. Same with infant feeding: There is information which shows you how "good" they are. Like with cars, they all meet a minimum standard. Like with the cars, you have other factors to consider too and you then choose the one best fitted to your circumstances.

Formula also has extra added iron so babies are unlikely to become anaemic, breastmilk is very low in iron so anaemia is common in BF babies weaned late.
I'd be interested to know where you got this information from as Pisacane A, et al. Iron status in breast-fed infants. J Pediatr 1995 Sep;127(3):429-31 found that those breastfed exclusively for longer had a better iron status.

From my training as an NCT breastfeeding counsellor when we looked at the composition of breastmilk.. and also from the neonatal consultants at 3 different hospitals who recommend iron supplements for preterm babies that have not laid down the store of iron in the last few weeks of pregnancy and are being exclusively breastfed and are at much higher risk of presenting with anaemia before the age of 2 years (most commonly at around 8 months of age), in contrast to formula fed preterm infants who are not given iron supplements as there is enough provided in the formula milk.

Iron in breastmilk is more easily absorbed bt it is in much less quantities than in formula..

I didn't say there was a definite divide of that proportion, i am merely guessing, it's not like we'd ever find out because not many people are going to say so are they?

Btw i am intending to be there on Sat but the car is in the garage on Fri for the brakes and wobblyness so hopefully it'll be fixed by Friday!! I'm still driving it atm, but i'd be a bit nervous driving it on the motorway as it is lol!!

no getting out of bed inthe middle of a cold night to warm a bottle and feed a sprog.
And that ladies and gentleman is the very reason I stuck with breastfeeding Aimee in the first few weeks when it was so blimmin difficult! (although if Caitlyn had come along first I very much doubt I would have stuck with it because she was an awful feeder... I ended up with nipple blisters and all sorts... Just knowing it got easier was the only thing that kept me going...)

Breastmilk is lower in iron than formula but it is in an easily absorbed state so breastfed babies are actually less likely to become anaemic... A lot of the iron in formula doesn't get absorbed which is why formula babies can become constipated...

and on that note, Aimee's back from her friends and the baby wants to go to bed... Laterzzzzzzzzzz....
