It made me laugh the other day when I was watching some programme where a woman was getting her scan, and they gave her about 10 pictures! I've only ever got one at the first scan, so methinks someone was trying to be extra nice in front of the cameras!

I saw that and commented on all the free scan photos! We have to pay £5  for one scan photo at each scan, on top of the scandalous parking charges!!

I suppose I ought to be grateful that we get two scans though, as I don't think I could have waited until 20 weeks to know that there was definitely a healthy baby in there after having a miscarriage last year. :(

Agutka - glad the scan went well for you. I don't think anything compares to the magic of seeing your baby on screen for the first time! :)

Saver Mum, I have no idea to be honest, but I'd say if they're not usual pains, to get ourself down to the day care unit at your maternity wing of your hospital to get a quick check over

    Hope you feel better soon

You only get one in Scotland (12 Week?) - If you want another you can pay for one at 30 weeks and get a Dvd of it - Think it is £100!

We are in South Ayrshire, Ayrshire and Arran offer a 12 week and 20 week scan, just had their leaflets delivered.

  • Hi, I am 10 + 1 and new to all this. I am being offered a blood test to test for Down's Syndrome where apparently 1 in 20 women are considered high risk. If you are high risk you can have an amnio where you have a 1 in 100 chance of miscarriage yet ony 1 in 250 of Downs. What has everybody else done? I would be grateful of some advice as it all sounds like it could be v stressful! 1 in 20 sounds like it is a very high chance you might need further tests, yet the second test sounds very scary. I am only 27. Thanks!

We decided against having the Downs blood test done as even if it showed there was a high risk and further tests went on to show a high risk, we wouldn't have terminated, so decided the blood test wasn't worth having done (I'm 27 also). You have make the decision for yourself, what would you do if they told you they was a very high risk of having a Downs baby, would it concern you enough to terminate the pregnancy, if the answer is no and you would be ok bringing up a Downs baby, is it worth you having the test. This was our thinking behind it. Good luck with your decision, whatever it may be.

we have decided not to have the test either, I am 34 so higher risk. Dh was dead against it and said we wld love baby whatever. When I talked to mw I came to the conclusion that even if I had test and got low risk results then it did not guarantee 100% that everything would be ok, and vice-versa high risk results did not necessarily mean a problem. Plus also having had mc and mmc did not want to risk mc through having tests. I think it is a very personal decision and not always easy to make.

Ditto the others, didn't have it done for same reasons. I was 35 and if I remember correctly, the chance of needing amnio was 1 in 5 for my age.
  • This is what I was thinking. Plus even if you were high risk and had further tests, by the time you found out for sure you would be about 18 weeks, and I don't think I would have a termination anyway. It's just hard to decide and the midwife didn't want to sway me either way, and as nobody apart from family know I am pregnant I can't ask anybody else what they did!! Thanks for all your kind responses, they are very helpful. x
