    Here's to boring - no more drama, stress or worry....can't wait till I can feel the lo move and kick Becles....I suppose that will be a while yet as I'm just 11+2?

    It's normally around 20-ish weeks, so not long to go. It feels like a butterfly fluttering in your tummy at first, and you might mistake it for wind!

    I felt the early kicks more when I was resting, and I noticed them first during the evenings when I was chilling out.
    Here I go again on my own....

    I've been reading 'what to expect...' and eventually understood that it's an american book, I don't need to find blackeyed (?) molasses or corn tortillas! Also the diet section goes on and on about the vitamins in nuts and liver, so I'm not listening to it and got back to my diet of junk food and chocolate. :o

    I could not get on with that book either - and it would say things like 'at this months check up...' - as if the NHS would pay for us all to have a check up each month! :rolleyes:

    In my opinion make sure you eat some oily fish if you can, fresh fruit and veg, cheese and milk - other than that don't worry about it!
    The IVF worked;DS born 2006.

    Becles - when I booked my scan I got a leaflet stating that I don't need to drink before any of these scans.

    I was told the opposite. They said you need a full bladder, so it's like a balloon and pops up out the way, rather than empty like a paper bag so it flops and gets in the way!

    I wonder if it depends on different scanning machines or something :confused:

    Hello!

    In my hospital they ask you to have a full bladder and provide water with a big label saying "for ladies awaiting scans only" which always annoys my fella as its only tap water and he gets parched!

    Hee hee, I know! This month the doctor will... Yes? What? Not see me? Not care? But what to expect after a chapter on choosing your doctor. In a british book they would have a chapter on how to get an appointment. I don't even know who I would turn to if I started bleeding right now! My maternity ward is in a hospital with just a minor injuries unit.

    The only food I'm good at eating off that list is milk! I've gone off cheese, can't stomach fruit (half a grapefruit anyone?), although have had expensive stuff recently like cherries and strawberries...hmmm. Oh and I ate a mackrel yesterday, after reading the book. As for veg, too tired (read lazy) to cook! I've got loads of good intentions rotting in the kitchen. This is too hard!

    As for the ultrasound bladder thing - I have a feeling I need to read that leaflet again...:confused:

    Aww had to giggle at the appoinment bit, Im 39+5 weeks and my midwife has been "booked up" for the last four weeks. I told the receptionist she would have to fit me in or I'd just sit and wait in the waiting room and have the baby there.

    Yep, said the same on my leaflet too. Said that it used to be the case that a full bladder was needed but the technology had improved so no longer a requirement.
  • I think you might be right about the technology. For both my 12 week and 20 week NHS scans on rusty old machines they told me to drink a pint of water as "it makes the bladder act like a window" :confused: but for my early scan in a swanky private unit they told me not to bother and I was only 8 weeks pregnant at that point.

    Confusing!

    Also for the poster who asked about honey and nuts in pregnancy. There is so much conflicting advice out there I've just stuck to the governments Food Standards Agency guidance as they do a lot of research before publishing their guidance and I'd prefer to follow that rather than a load of old wives tales. There is a good summary page here
    http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/agesandstages/pregnancy/whenyrpregnant/

    For honey it says;
    "Honey – it’s fine for pregnant women but honey isn’t suitable for babies under a year old"

    & for nuts you might have to avoid peanuts if the following applies to you;
    "Should I avoid peanuts? Serious allergies to nuts and nut products and some seeds affect about 1 to 2% of people in the UK. Your baby may be at higher risk of developing a nut allergy if you, the baby's father, brothers or sisters have certain allergic conditions such as hayfever, asthma and/or eczema. If your baby is in this higher-risk group, you may wish to avoid eating peanuts and peanut products when you're pregnant and breastfeeding."

    Best wishes

    :j Go on, shake your money maker! :j
  • Moneyshaker you are right it is just peanuts not all types of nuts.
  • My first scan (7 weeks) was when I was in hospital with sickness and dehydration and had only just been put on a drip so I definitely didn't have a full bladder but they never said anything and the scan report said the view was "good".

    Second scan (11 weeks) was a routine one and leaflet said to drink a pint an hour before scan. I didn't even attempt it as I was still pretty sick and again the view was "good".

    Third scan (19 weeks) was routine and leaflet said to drink a pint half an hour before hand. This time I tried it (although about 45 mins before as we were about to set off) but I think I must have been dehydrated from being sick so much the previous day as the midwife said rather grumpily, "Your bladder is completely empty!" This one was a different machine but it still said the view was good.

    My friend who goes to the same hospital told me that she always gets asked to "half" empty her bladder because her womb is tilted the opposite way to usual and a full bladder obscures the view.

    To be honest I think they make it sound far more important than it actually is perhaps because it made more of a difference in the past so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
