Schadenfreude (shadenfraud)is a German word meaning "pleasure from other's misfortune." There is no word in English which means the same thing.

People who habitually find amusement in other's misfortunes are narcissistic and display the competitive emotions envy and gloating openly. It is believed that these individuals lack social cooperative and interaction skills, and compensate by enjoying the misfortunes of the target of their competition.

I don't know why I couldn't remember the word schadenfreude, probably have too many other things going round in my head at the moment (I'm looking into going bankrupt).

I'd better get off the computer and get dressed (still in my PJs :o) and go and sort out some stuff for ebay.

    I'll pop in later.

One of the most useful things i learnt on my teacher training course was schadenfreude. It sums up the culture in my office!!!

Just come back from a trip to the supermarket. V expensive £26!!! but i did buy a £5 hair conditioner and tons of fruit, veg and whoopsied turkey and pork. It is freezing out there!!!

    Hi all,

Have just been having a little nap - shame on me!

Love all the discussion re schadenfreude - a brilliant word for summing up the attitude of many people!

Regarding your bankruptcy, Pixiechick, i this a sudden decision or have you been thinking about it for some time? This is not meant to be prying, so please don't tell us more than you want to, but remember we are all here to support each other - no schadenfreude among friends. I am so grateful for the way everyone has supported me that I feel I really want to give something back. Which sounds a bit sloppy, but wasn't intentional - honest!

Did i say i was going to have an active dynamic day girls?

I fell asleep watching Escape to the Country after v cold shopping trip to supermarket and have just woken up.

EEEEEK! no washing up done, no housework or anything, after this cup of tea i am going to pull my socks up but will keep logged on so i can catch up with you all.

Pixiechick i hope you are feeling ok. It is extremely stressful and you have been helping us and i feel that i have not really been there for you. I completely agree with Ann anytime you wish to chat we will be here for you.

    Big (tremendous) hug,

    Hi SW,

Stop feeling guilty about having a nap and not doing chores!

Tomorrow is another day - leave them until then!
