it seems they dont really know what exactly causes it. for example is it when you connect it to the net or not? is it all the fat consoles or just the 60gb versions for example. i am just curious that if it is the change to 1st march that caused it then why didnt it happen to mine when i was watching a blu ray in the early hours. it is also odd that it doesnt happen to the slim versions considering they all get the same software updates from sony. i also wonder how we can avoid the problem considering it is meant to happen when you switch it on and we are going to have to switch it on before we can download the patch.

I bet the problem is in a piece of software controlling the clock that the firmware update can't get access to. They obviously are already aware of the bug since it doesn't affect the newer slims but they've been unable to apply this fix to the fats using their firmware update.

I think either the problem will magically correct itself on the stroke of midnight or Sony will be asking everyone to send their console in for repair, where they will do what some people have been doing which is to take the battery out for 5 mins and put it back in.

Why didn't this happen last year? It wasn't a leap year then either.

it could be specific to the most recent update, 3.15 was it? i wish i hadnt installed it now. thats another thing that shows they dont have a clue. is it specific to the msot recent update or not? some people wont have installed that but will see this thread and not use their console.

I doubt it as the console needs to be on for anything to function, even just in standby nothing will operate.

Mine is safely staying off for the time being;)

It's not necessarily a software issue, and I doubt Sony knew about it because they would have done something about it before it became a major problem.

From what I understand, PS3s have a hardware based clock in them, it's value can only be read from a low level call using the hypervisor, it cannot be changed. It's possible (and indeed likely) that the hardware is different in newer models, which is why they're not being affected.

Either way, I'm sure a software workaround is possible.
