Rachel - well done you. I worked at a homeless hostel for two years and indeed, some stories are heartbreaking. You're totally right - there but for the grace of god and all that.

Incidently and very off topic, what type of dog have you got? Been meaning to ask for ages!

Nomorespending - congrats on deciding to join SW. I first joined three years ago and lost three and a half stone. Re-joined two weeks ago - had put it all back on and more  But it feels great to be back on it and doing something about my health in general.

I have collected lots of receipes so if you need a hand with anything or some extra support, give me a shout

  • Triangle - I have a Bichon Frise called Taffy. He's nearly 6 and currently snoozing at the top of the stairs after his big Sunday morning walk!
  • Triangle - thanks so so much.. I will gladly and greatfully accept any help going( i'm going to need it as I am so rubbish at losing weight - its one of those things i just can't do. I gave up smoking easily because you can just stop and thats it, but i find food so hard, because you have to eat and because i feel so stressed all the time, its been one of those things I have felt I just can't cope with)
Have to say i think its a result that i'm feeling a bit in control with my debts - thanks to this site and the lovely people on this board - that i can even consider addressing my health.
Am thinking of putting my weight each week on my signature. although i'm pretty ashamed of it and i know thats not really what this site is for, but thought it might just help me to track how i'm doing as putting my debt down on my signature has certainly helped.

Rachel, well done you. :AThat is truly a good thing you have done.

My DH gave his sandwiches to a homeless guy the other week. The guy was very thankful. Hadnt asked for anything, but DH just noticed him while he was working & offered his lunch.

It does make us all stop and think, yes we are all skint, but we have a roof over our heads, a bed to sleep in, and food to eat. Makes you appreciate what you have got.

I am thankful for my wonderful husband, and my wonderful children!!

If its any consolation (and it won't be much) my sister is really thin and it takes her about <1m to let me know exactly how fat she thinks I am every single time I see her - to the point that the family and I all have bets on how long it will take her.

I'm glad you're feeling more in control - the site has helped me focus on other things when I felt more in control of my money :)

I think putting your weight in your sig is a good idea - I've got an old photo of me in my avatar to remind myself what I look like when I'm a good bit lighter in weight than I am now..........my face gets so bloated when I put on weight so seeing the non-bloated face makes me think.

I might change my sig later as well! goodluck with it all and stick with Triangle - she's good at all this stuff

Lots of other things to comment on here - will maybe get back later on - off ot google whatever Rachels doggie looks like - I've a 4 year old cairn terrier who looks like a haggis................and is also snoring after being out - lol

My dog never got a name - the man who breeds them called him the 'Peedie pup' - he was the runt (peedie is orcadian for small or wee) so now he's just Peedie - we love his name but alot of folk here think its bonkers to call your dog small xx

Washing machine to fix now - ergh! Better attempting it myself than calling out the man locally so will try first myself
Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.
Total debt as of 28/4/19 £7867.38:eek:

Rachel - I love those dogs!! I have a little westie called Archie - 11 months old and such a mischievous little imp! Have you spied a picture's of Fay's new house (think its on her diary thread?) I could just seen my little boy running around in circles up there - he would love it!

Nomorespending - I am the same as you, since re-joining MSE its made me feel more in control of life in general which is another reason I am back at SW. PM me if you like and we swap success stories/tips. I promise that you will feel so much better, I've a tad more weight to lose than you so if it helps, I'll add a weight loss thingymebob to my signature too. You've nothing at all to be ashamed of.

  • good afternoon folks.

This weekend I noticed my bank account was a little above my "buffer", and very close to the amount left owing on my credit card. So I've taken the plunge and paid the remaining balance. From what I've read, I'll probably get a small bill for interest on the next statement, but almost debt-free there :o

I've got a few items listed on ebay that have got bids, which finish today.

It was really refreshing to read about the acts of kindness btw :)

Just did a huge post and it disappeared so I'll summarise it and try again...

Last night I had a massive eye opener when picking OH up from the pub. We popped into the shop for a few bits on the way home and outside there was a young man effectively begging. He looked awful - filthy dirty, painfully thin and in tears. I didin't have any change so went in the shop to get some.

When I came out instead of just giving him the money for some reason I felt compelled to talk to him - his story was heartbreaking. He wasn't drunk, on drugs or anything like that, just utterly lost. He'd been living on the street for 6 months with the odd day in a hostel - his girlfriend had left him with lots of debt, unpaid rent, bills etc and effectively he lost his flat. He had literally nothing just the clothes he was sat in. He was just devastated, defeated and didn't know what to do.

A few others and myself clubbed together and got enough to pay for a few nights in a hostel for him and OH and I drove him there, checked him in and made sure he had enough for a warm meal. He almost wouldn't get in the car as he was so embarrassed about being smelly and dirty, bless him. His story was heartbreaking and made me think there for the grace of god .....

I'm probably like a lot of people and thought that people like him were somehow at fault and could help themselves but he clearly couldn't.

Just made me really think about what I do have rather than what I don't and to be grateful for small things.

I don't mean to preach at all - it just totally rocked me and thought someone may be interested.

    That's wonderful of you :T
I but the Big Issue every week and I remember once buying it from a lovely chap outside the station when some very well dressed men in suits said to me something along the lines of "don't do that, he'll just waste it on drugs and booze". I think sometimes people tell themselves that this is the case so they can feel better about doing nothing. Anyone can become homeless, like you say. That there are people like bankers earning millions (of taxpayers' money!) and some people living on the streets, to my mind is simply unacceptable.

Anyway, onto my DFW things for the weekend!
    1. Listed most of my belongings on eB4y!
    2. Sold a couple of items on am4zon.
    3. Worked three shifts at 2nd job
    4. Saved up 2 months' worth of cans and posted them in Tesc0's machine, earning myself some green points!
    5. Made a lovely smoothie out of some oldish fruit.

Hope everyone had/has a lovely DFW weekend!
    Overpay!

    Hi all,

Been into Tesco today. Didn't go in with a list but with one of those money off leaflets and virtually everything I bought was on the leaflet. I think there were 2 full price items in my basket.

The main saving which I thought was brill was curry sauce. I use it with veg and my leftover Sunday meat for a curry. Anyway they've got jars of Patak's curry sauces in for a £1 each. I bought about 5! I always dilute a jar with one jar of water to make it go further.
