TV Licence - No TV

I want to say congrats and welcome.
I broke away and dumped the telly a month ago. Wish I had done it ages ago. Don't have to rush back to watch whatever or think about setting the video recorder.
I do listen to the radio though which actually I think is nicer. I remember my Nan's Radiogram and would think it woul make a nice room feature now.0 -

In the experience of plenty of people I know who don't have tv licences they give up quickly enough and leave you in peace to watch your videos etc. without any harassment. They may not have any right to know but surely it's not worth a major campaign just to prove a point.
Well, you're assuming they will leave you alone after the come calling, in my case I *had* a license, but they still sent threatening letters and sent an inspector round, he validated the license... and we continued to receive letters :eek:0 -
I simply cancelled the Direct Debit and so far have not heard anything0

I absolutely agree with the principles of the thing, but in this case I just don't think it's worth the hassle. I know plenty of people who don't have tvs and who don't have any hassle from the licencing authorities, no-one came snooping in cupboards, they just spent 5 minutes having a chat and that was that. No one forced entry, no signs 'keep out of my garden' were erected (couldn't do that in mine as there's a public footpath through it - how about that for a campaign?) and there was no aggravation. The occasional reminder since but they go straight on the fire - end of!
Someone banging on the door at 10.30 is a matter for the police. That's clear, whoever it is, but I've spoken to a few people now since asking my question on the other thread, and to others who don't have tv, and none of them have experienced anything like this. It seems as though more and more people are going without a tv nowadays so the authorities must be getting more desperate. Have you taken it up with the licensing authority that their contractors are using these methods?
I'll campaign for England when it's something that matters, but not this.0 -
I must admit, I only know a couple of people without a TV and they have had terrible problems with TVL. It seems that unless you spend your life sat in front of a box, then you are just odd! The turning up at 10.30pm on my doorstep would be greeted with a less than friendly reception as I do live on my own. That would definitely result in a call to the local plod.
Being TV free is libertating. I listen to the radio, read and use the net but I find I am getting so much more done as there is no box to keep me occupied. I watch what I want, when I want. I won't be going back that's for sure. My only problems arise are when some of my family visit (who are avid soap watchers ). However, once they realise that it doesn't mean they don't get to see their soaps just a little later on, they soon calm down.
It's frightening just how much TV takes over your life.0 -

What radio stations do you listen to? I listen to Radio 4 and particularly like the Shipping Forecast! Also I have got into the Archers and on Desert Island Discs this morning was an actress in the Archers who was 90 years old.
I hate the way people seem to let the telly rule their lives0 -
