Thank God (and the site's techies) for mail alerts, I remember why I popped in now

Northern Foods, used to make the cottage cheese for all the major supermarkets, just different packaging. M&S had less salt, but the formula wasn't always changed in time (less salt in M&S cottage cheese apparently), so sometimes it was exactly what Sainsbury's etc sold, but dearer.

I'm not sure who makes it now though - this was a while back.

Having known 2 people who worked for Heinz for many years I was told that Heinz do not make products for any other label or company other than their own.

It's the same with Kellogg's I'm given to understand. You can always tell the difference between their cereals & shop's own brands. They just don't compare.

What hasnt been really touched upon yet is where a supermarket own brand is supplied by more than one supplier - eg Sainsburys Baked Beans used to be supplied by about five different companies, and it used to depend where in the country you lived as to which kind of bean you got.

Theyre all meant to be made to the same "Sainsbury recipe" but there often can be differences.

Same goes for things like milk, spuds etc.

I worked in a pie factory a couple of year's ago (now no jokes here!) in the West Midlands who make top quality pies and quiches and supply the better end of the market. They were delicious. We tried to get into Asda etc but found to make any profit from the products we would have to skimp on the products used and use inferior tasting produce. The company were not prepared to cut down on taste and quality and so decided not to go with the supermarkets. I believe some non branded goods are fine but do believe that quality is sometimes skimped on to make a profit as supermarkets cut the proft margin to the bone for manufactuers.

Kellogg's do make cereals for others. Their Rice Krispies go into Nestle Toffee Crisp's. But you're right the don't sell there cereals as breakfast cereals to anyone else

My hubby used to work for McVities & they used to supply Marks & Spencers with Biscuits for cheese etc & he said there was no change of product just packaging.

Despite all the "Brands" available, there are only a few companies.
L'oreal being one who own several of the major brands.
I have often wondered if you get what you pay for or if there are differences between the major brands and stores own ?
What do you think or know ?

Also perfumes, does anyone know how many perfume manufacturers there are ? are they all made by the same few companies ?
Has anyone come accross perfumes just like the big brands ?or can recommend good smell-a-likes ?
I am sure that this is an area that we spend far too much money on, when we could be using cheaper but just as good alternatives ?

Basically I thinkk you only get what you pay for but in some things it is enough, I think in moisturisers for instance.

Wish I or someone else had an answeer to this one but on holidy in Bulgaria I bought a copy perfume from Lidls, I never buy coipies thinking they are so inferior, but this one was so good I bought some to come home with it was a copy of D&G Light Blue. I wrote to Lidls asking why we can't have such good stuff here in th UK, their reply was 'we have different procuring source but it's always nice to have compliments' Pah!! no good to us that.

I am sure they rip us off too I used to be impressed with te Body Shop oils but they seem to have stopped doing them.

It will be interesting to see if anyone comes up with some good prefume copies cos I sure would buy them I have a heavy hand with the good stuff.
