Great 'disguised Own Brand' Hunt.

Just to add my tuppence worth and this is correct information as of todays date.

Karft Jacobs Suchard who own Maxwell House and Kenco coffee make the stores coffees. So if it freeze dried and under their 'Gold' own label it will be Kenco. If it is just instant then that is Maxwell House. It comes off their line at Banbury in Oxfordshire. Aldi coffee is supplied by Jacobs are comes highly rated in taste tests.

All own stores cakes (but not Waitrose for some reason) are supplied by Memory Lane Cakes, who also stock them for Aldi with the Memory Lane Cake brand on them. Gu Rocky Roads and Flapjacks are also make by Memory Lane. The part baked bread rolls for Sainsbury's are made by Memory Lane. Even the Taste The Difference Mince Pies from Sainsbury's came off the line at Memory Lane too

Alba, Goodmans, JVC, Grundig are under one roof.

Walkers who make the shortbread supply Lidl with their own branded shortbread, but it's still Walkers at heart.

I was reading the first page of this thread when i realised that there were 90-odd pages, so I have skipped to here!

Anyway, i remeber about 15 years ago I was obessed with a chicken Kiev product made by a company in Hereford called Sun Valley. At the time they made the most succulent chicken Kievs INTHE WORLD! IMO, of course.

Seriously guys - they were full of lovely garlicky butter oozing out onto my new potatoes and peas - heaven! Then something went wrong...

Sainsburys didn't stock the Sun Valley ones anymore.:exclamati

But they had a 'own brand' version, and, OMG, it was nothing as good as the SV one. It was all dry inside. And not just one of them. They were all nasty versions of the original.

I used to go to Hereford quite a lot in those days, I was HGV driver, and was shocked to hear that there had been a big fire at the SV factory, which had killed many thousands of birds and I think ruined the company. It was very sad.

But I never saw a decent chicken Kiv in the shops ever since, and I often wondered if Sainsburys got SV to make the Kiev's for them and forgoes the SV branding and make it cheap. Well, they were cheap, but they were also nasty.

I haven't had a succulent chicken Kiev ever since the late 1980s. And I don't trust own brands anymore, and taken a lot of convincing.

Sorry for the rant. It's been playing on my mind for a long time.

Obviously! Have you tried the Waitrose ones? You might be pleasantly surprised.

The only place we buy Kievs from are Costco- real chicken
breasts not the mushy stuff, more expensive but definatly
worth it.

Do you know if this has always been the case? In our house we used to love the millionaire flapjacks but the last few times they've tasted different and not been anywhere near as nice as they used to be. I wondered if they'd perhaps changed supplier and/or de-spec'd the ingredients to bring the price down.

Valeo and Bosch are suppliers to motor manufacturers for things like wiper blades and a whole lot more. So even though the wiper blade may come in Peugeot packaging, the auto manufacturers never make their own wiper blades, they have them supplied. You also find that manufacturers have more than one supplier for certain parts.

OMG :eek: you brought back such lovely memories, i too was addicted to them, had to limit to friday night treat while watching prisoner cell block h lol .

I too have tried all the others and nothing comes close, don;t bother with birds eye they are disgusting. I started to make my own but kievs are not the easiest thing to make.

I used to deal with shipping documents for the agents who import on behalf of the major brand names.
I remember one set of documents for tinned salmon on which so many cartons were labelled for this brand, so many for another brand - 6 different competitor brands including at least one own label.
The imprints on the cans themselves are codes for the canner, time of canning, type of product etc etc etc; all the cans for all the brands had identical imprints indicating that they were all processed at the same time by the same canner from the same raw materials treated in the same way. Ergo the contents should have been identical but the price range was substantial
