I was told by my long-time friend who has worked in the business for years, that all TV's are now made by Samsung. Can anyone confirm this?

Pretty sure this isn't the case.

I've also heard people say exactly the same thing, but that LG make all tvs.

Well, I can't prove this, however it's a non too well kept secret that Samsung make really good panels, BUT they sometimes can't keep up, and might buy in outsourced panels (Or used to) on the cheaper sets. This was a bit of an outcry a couple of years ago, as Philips for example are pretty rank.
I think Philips only sold a good quantity of tvs five years or so ago, because they pioneered the silver lifestyle design on widescreen sets. Unfortunately they haven't been a premium brand for many years.

Sony and Panasonic tvs in particular though are protective towards their sets. Still, might be true, but if it is, then they are making pretty different spec for the Panasonic, and making rubbish sets for Sony ;)
  • i used to work for a very large Ad Agency and went on many client visits...
    1) Cereal Partners, owned by Nestle, they make own label cereals and biscuit snacks.
During a factory visit, I witnessed them changing the packaging mid shift from Nestle Mini Shreddies to Sainsbury's own label, also Rittz cracker bisuits. Whiteboards on production lines gave times/shift patterns for variuos supermarket brands.
    2) Boots own Crookes Healthcare, they make Nurofen, Calpol etc... best off with Boots own label rather than more expensive Nurofen brand...
    3) Panasonic make Duracell batteries. Panasonic also own/manufacture Technics.
    4) Dewalt is the same company as Black & Decker, different casings, much more expensive.
    5) Nestle used to own Crosse & Blackwell and Branston... sold out to Heinz Premier (HP)... their baked beans are made in the same factory in Norfolk, sauces are very slightly different, but same baking process, same canning just different labelling. Also make own lavel 'no frills' brands.
Many more that have slipped my mind at the moment, but I will add as and when I recall them...
Oh yeah, Dunlop tyres were made by Goodyear...
  • MMMmmm mattesons... same company as Richmond Sausages (bluurrgghhh!!)
  • Personal, whilst i find it genuinely interesting to learn who manufactures what for who etc, this whoel thread ought to be taken with a pinch of salt... The amount of contradiction (if you you alot!) of it is comical..

Also, just because a big brand company makes a value range doesnt make it the same product.

I used to work for KP (long long time ago!) and they used to halt the production line and start churning out no namer brands (and for the foreign market)... BUT the ingredients were also changed, sometimes significantly - some company, very different product.

  • I used to work for a company that supplied the DIY store Wickes.

They reduce their costs by only selling 1 brand of every product, thus having smaller supply chain costs.

All of their products are 'own brand', and all of them that I know of are made by leading manufacturers, almost always to the same recipes and standards as the manufacturer's brand.

The ones I know for definate are that all their kitchen electricals in their showroom are supplied by Electrolux (not the 'off the shelf' ones, they are Moffat), and are identical to electrolux's standard range. Wickes' 'Forget Nails' is the same stuff, with the same formula, as 'No More Nails'. Their sinks are all made by Astracast, which is part of Jacuzzi UK, and are made to the same quality standard, with the same materials, on the same production lines as the Astracast own brand sinks found in the posh kitchen showrooms. Obviously there are material differences between the bottom and top of the ranges, but the top of the range in Wickes will cost £250, and the same model in the showroom will cost £500.

I've never worked for Wickes, and I don't have any inolvement with them now, but I will only shop there for DIY products. I'd recommend trying them. If you normally buy Polyfilla, try the Wickes equivalent, and you're almost certain to find identical results.

Anyone know, please, the difference (if any) between Holts windscreen wash and Tesco's Own Brand? Thanks
  • Lidl's Mister Choc Choco Caramel bars are Mars Bars, but a lot cheaper, well I'm not saying they are the exact same product but I can't taste the difference!
