Great 'disguised Own Brand' Hunt.

First time poster so please be gentle with me!

I mainly wanted to say thank you to all of those who've poted such fascinating information, I've read all the posts, over three days with BF laughing at me every time he walks past!

I've read lots in the thread about clothes washing products and, as a which subscriber, have to say it seems very unlikely the own brand products are the same as the branded products as many were tested and the results are very different. That's not to say the own brands are not good and, in some cases better than some of the branded products. I can't remember off the top of my head what came where and which have done something horrid to their website which means I can't find anything useful!

From a personal point of view I use Ecover - mainly to avoid itchiness as certainly Ariel and some other perfumed/bio products used to bring me up in hives and I got tired of looking for something that didn't when they changed formulas or discontinued things I liked. I do remember Ecover came pretty far down the list for effectiveness and value for money but I'm still sticking to it, as last time I experimented with another brand almost all the box eventually went in the bin which rather negates the saving!

Firstly, I just wanted to mention an idea, for those who have not heard of it.
YOu mentioned that you threw the reainder of a box of washing powder away as you had not got on with it. The last time I didn't get on with washing powder, it was a box of Persil. Rather than throw it away, I offered it on my local Freecycle group.
A mum of 7 was very glad of it, and it didn't go to waste. It saved her money, eased my concience, and helped the environment by not filling up Landfill sites.

Secondly, there has been some discussion on this thread about Alba. I worked as a temp a couple of years ago for Alba, covering for their receptionist who was on sick leave.
Alba comes under the umbrella of the "Harvard" group of companies. They also own Dirt Devil/ Power Devil, Goodmans, Bush, Grundig, and loads of others. See here: http://www.albaplc.com/html/Products.htm
They even manufacture Nicky Clarke products, such as hair straighteners.

If you buy any of the above products, I would say beware! As a receptionist, I used to get lots of calls from disgruntled customer who had spent hours on the phone to the customer services lines, only to never get through.
One man had phoned for 2 hours a day for 10 days running!

Look at the sugar content of supermarket brand cereals against Kellogs! I was horrified. Only buy kellogs now! Supermarket brands have double and sometimes triple the ammount of sugar. And I am talking Rice Crispies and Cornflakes here not cocopops and the like!

Where are you shopping? Tesco cornflakes have a little more sugar per 100g, but their rice krispies have less.

Been in today and it is as I thought.

Based on a 30g serving with 125ml semi skimmed milk.

Tesco Cornflakes 8.9g sugar
Tesco Rice Krispies 9.2g sugar

Kellogs Cornflakes 2.5g sugar
Kellogs Rice Krispies 3g sugar

Yes, I will definatly pay the extra for Kellogs!

years ago i worked for a company called mccormacks. we made all the dried herbs and spices for schwartz. the only "own brand" we made were co-op. we also made old el paso taco etc mix, walkers crisp flavours, several restaurant/catering brands ( big tubs) and colonel saunders secret recipe kfc coating. never worked on that line though so don't ask the recipe!

I'm afraid that's impossible given that 100ml ss milk has 4.8g sugar (lactose) alone before you even bring cereal into the equation. The 2.5g and 3g are for the cereal alone.

Kelloggs corn flakes - 8g

0.2g more sugar in the tesco rice pops
0.9g less sugar in the tesco corn flakes

OMG I thought the traffic light system was meant to make it easier. If this is correct, Kellogs and Tesco should be ashamed of themselves for not being consistent. Tesco show the values with milk and Kellogs without, so Kellogs look a lot healthier. VERY CLEVER KELLOGS but my absolute loyalty has dissapeared. SHOCKING
