will they prosecute him as am not sure if i want to go through that if it is found out to be my dad

I've no idea, They might drop it if you pay whatever's outstanding and close the account. On the other hand they might want to get to the bottom of it now that the ball has started rolling (sorry about the mixed metaphors). If they have proof that the account was operated from your house than I don't see any way out of paying the balance off unless you are prepared to take it further (and get whoever is responsible into trouble).
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

If your father has stolen your husband's details and taken out debts in his name, potentially damaging his credit rating (which could have a large knock on effect as to what mortgage rates, loan rates, card rates etc he will get - which could cost him thousands extra in interest) and this has been going on for years then why would you not want to prosecute him?

I suppose you could ask your father and if it is him ask him to repay the money owed and pay off the debt and close it down. But that won't address any damage thats been caused to your husbands credit rating (and potentially yours if you have any joint products).

Have you checked husbands credit report to see that there are no other accounts and to see what stage this account is at?

    Gets better and better :)

So, since 13:01 when you first posted, and 35 posts later, we've gone from just finding out that someone applied for a card in your husband's name, to there being a balance on it, to the possibility that it's your dad.

    Have you asked your dad?

Are they still investigating or have they come back to you to say they have investigated and it was someone at your address, email address and IP address therefore they hold you liable?

If the former they could still come back to you and say they have found evidence it was someone else.

If it was the latter and you then agree to repay the debt I would imagine that this would not 'look good' to Egg, it may appear to them as though you were just trying to get out of paying the debt.

As an earlier poster asked - have you found out what email address the statements were being sent to? this should give you a big clue as to whether it was your Dad (presumably there is no way he would have had access to husband's emails for 5years)

As opposed to what? They'll report back their findings.
