They may struggle to find out who made the initial application but they should be able to review when and where the card was used and where the repayments came from to track down who has been using the card.

Its not very common for someone to take out a card, make purchases and start making repayments on the fraudulent card. Therefore I suppose they may think its more likely to be someone connected to you - a relative or friend etc as opposed to random identity theft, so they may investigate that avenue first.

can we continue to tell them we wont pay even though they say its nt us and prove it ourselves

Have your formally written to them to place the account in dispute saying that you know nothing of the debt? If you haven't and they are hassling you for repayments then you could do this, pending the results of their investigation.

It could take a while, it could be pretty straight forward and be sorted pretty quick. Each case is different and it will depend on how complicated the issues in this particular case are.

Just to clarify - someone applied for and was issued with a card in 2005 in your husband's name and has made purchases and payments since then?

If so, what address was the original card sent to? In 5 years they would almost certainly have sent out replacement cards, again to what address? They should also be able to see that payments to the card did not come from your account(s). What email address do they have registered against the account?

An IP address will change, e.g. when your router resets, but it is odd if they have a record of a transaction with their internet site that matches an IP address that now matches you.

If you are certain that no-one in your household has been using this account then the burden of proof is with Egg, they must prove that it is you who have been using the account.

Have you asked for copies of the cc statements to see if you recognize any purchases?
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
  • they have put the account on hold

You would have to tell Egg that you believe the card is being used fraudently and if you really suspect your father then you will have to tell them that as well.
