I went through a phase of writing down the cost of what I bought and keeping a tally of how many times I wore it to see how much it did actually cost in terms of price per wear. A Karen Millen cardi which I still wear now and is at least 8 years old was one of the best value items at £90.

I do have to admit about not really thinking about the ethics of products but I am really cynical about the media and media propaganda so tend to switch off to anything I might not want to hear - not a very mature attitude but you have to admire my honesty.

I'm not sure I have ever thrown an item of my clothing away! Anything that doesn't sell on ebay gets sent to a charity shop or if it isn't good enough for that gets torn in to cleaning rags.

My new skirt didn't photograph well but here is what i'm wearing today anyway

    Topshop stretch skirt
    Sonic Youth tshirt
    New DP black ring

Haven't quite got the hang of this photoing myself thing yet, I promise i'm not that pale normally!
Must get walking the dog, washing up, tidying my room and going to buy my bfs present. Catch up later, hope everyone is having a nice and sunny day. :)

IMO I have more guilt about un worn stuff of any sort. I have a lot of lovely clothes, now all to small, I don't feel bad paying a lot for an item if I can afford it. I feel worse about supporting monopolies than I do about employment situation personally, though I accept thats an opion made from a very lucky position and an unpopular stance.

There are clothes made in UK in good conditions that don't cost the earth: these designers boost out economy.

I think overthinking is a danger, but its not worse, its better, than unthinking buy, buy, buy consumerism which infects us in this country. :)

Its one of the reasons I adore Goan's b;og so much.

    Yes,
    wise words.

    I'm really enjoying this conversation.

    *edit*

Tsabo- you look lovely, you have gorgeous hair! And nowt wrong with being pale!

really great converstaion here. We have quite a few fashion/clothing industry related things come up on the debate economy etc board...for various reasons.

    Thanks, Lost (blush, blush).

Asda has had a disasterous effect on my hometown. After a huge payout to our council it got sited slap bang in the centre of our historic 900 year old market.
As it's 24 hour store and sells everything from clothes to music, books and household linen it's been the kiss of death to our town. There's now less than 20 market stalls left as everything anybody wants can be bought under one roof plus all the surrounding independent shops have closed and even a couple of our historic pubs as everyone drives to do their big shop and doesn't feel the need to pop in for a pub lunch or a glass of wine.
Although I do my best to avoid it I'm fighting a losing battle.

That's a great idea, Retro. It's certainly worth having a go at taking things in yourself or even chopping the length and sleeves off and making a funky tunic to wear over leggings and jeans.

I think Im going to have a go first on *that* top...if it all goes wrong I can alway sut it up for dusters cant I? lol

My town is odd for shops. Clothing wise we literally have Peacocks, New Look and Ethel Austin
and then a lot of charity shops that don't do well because they charge the same as the highstreet shops. Which I wouldn't mind paying so much if it was decent stuff like Goan and others find!

Bristol has a huge wealth of highstreet shops, but also the fabulous St Nicks market which I LOVE. They really support local traders and when I was at college (and now the rare occassion I am in town) I always pop a long for a browse and a chat with the stall holders.

That's what I love about market shopping, the camaraderie with the traders and the fact that being a bit flirty means that they'll knock a few quid of the asking price. You don't get that in Asda!

Exactly! Christmas 2008 all my presents were bought from the market and not only did I save an awful lot of money,
but I also met some amazing people and found some gorgeous things that you just cant get in chain stores!

    hello all,
crazy morning and just about to pop into a meeting so thought i'd have a quick catch up..
i totally agree with the above comments, in the past i've definitely been guilty of buying things and never wearing them..i then tend to sell on ebay / give to a friend / charity shop them, but the point is not to buy for the sake of it..i'm learning this and becoming more conscious of it now, i think..
i for one love primark, but do agree that it's one of the places i would tend to buy in quantity just becvause of the prices..rather than spending the money on something i loved elsewhere, but was more expensive..
hence my list of things i actually wanted / needed for outfits, to try and wear more of the things i already have..i don't think it's wrong to spend what you can afford to on clothes etc IF you will get the use of them..i have no qualms about wearing soemthing i love over and over, regardless of current trends etc, as i feel it is silly to only wear seomthing for as long as it's in trend, so at least i don't do that..

not sure if any of that makes sense :S

    today's outfit is:

green/grey floral shift dress, dotty p's sale..
    black tights
green velveteen ballet pumps with ankle ties, office sale
    teal shrug, new look
black rose on elastic headband, h&m
long silver chain with silver heart.. (???)
