  • Hi, I have just this minute taken a plum crumble out of the oven and it is fab. I added some strawberries as well and it was perfect. As i have a plum tree i seem to still be drowning in them!I use a recipe by Annabel Karmel which you can find if you search for in google.

    Hi maggied,

As Chris has mentioned there is an earlier thread with lots of ideas so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

  • Sorry, forgot to search first!
Thanks very much for moving me.
The receipes all sound great - I think I'll have to make a couple of the cakes for the freezer and then de-stone and freeze the rest (didn't know you could do that!) for crumbles etc through the year - yum!!
  • Right had a quick look through and can see I'm going to be having a good baking session at the weekend!

Couple of questions - there also seem to be a load of cooking apples - can I freeze these if I slice them?
Plum and orange cake - can I freeze that?
If you stew the plums first do you get a very runny / mushy crumble when you defrost them?
We've found a blackberry bush in the woods just near us that's not far off being ripe so off to pick bagfuls of them at the weekend too!
Going to have to get growing some more of our own stuff next year - managed runner beans, chillis, rocket and herbs this year but it's so brilliant we'll have to expand!

You can freeze sliced/chopped cooking apples - they might go a bit mushy when you defrost them but they'll go mushy when you cook them anyway, so I don't suppose that will be a problem.

I must confess that no plum and orange cake has ever lasted long enough for me to try freezing it (:o) - I think the cake itself would be fine but I'm not sure about the sugar topping. It might be best to freeze the cake without the topping and add it when the cake's defrosted - I stress I haven't tried it, though, so it's a guess!
Back after a very long break!

Great ideas I made plum n tomato soup!! sounds awful but tastes good.

Eitjher use a tin of toms or fresh and add chopped plums simmer add chopped onion (I fried mine first optional) add chopped thyme and chives.

    Enjoy!
  • Hi everyone! I have 6 large plums that need to be used as I have had them for a few days and I don't want to throw them away ;) - what can I make with them? It has to be something that I can freeze as dinners for the next few days are sorted already. I have most store cupboard ingredients, loads of fruit etc. Any ideas - other than a plum sauce (although good recipes for plum sauce are welcome too!!!) ??

I had this problem a few weeks ago with a punnet of apricots that were so bland I didn't want to eat them raw. I just quartered them and stewed them for about ten minutes with a bit of sugar and honey (not sweetener, you need the sugar as a preservative). The flavour really improved.

I ate them on yoghurt for breakfasts for the week but they would have been good on ice cream too. And if you added no water and stewed them quite "dry" they would make a sweet chutney to have with pork or cheese.

Once stewed you could freeze them until you have time to find a cake or crumble recipe you fancy.
