My son has never been abroad

Maybe things have changed in the last few years, but we were advised to take them and so was my SIL 2 years ago!
Oh just looked on department of health website and they recommend malaria tablets for Africa.
I think it depends on what kind of holiday you are going on.
If you are staying in 5* hotels in the city then you probably don't need them.
If you are out in the countryside or doing a more trekking style holiday then you might need them.
This is why it's important to get a consultation with your doctor/nurse rather than just look up "Africa" on the web.
Malaria tends to be quite localised in the areas it affects.
Our nurse gave us lots of helpful advice like taking B complex vitamins and yakult. Because they have access to our medical records the advice was also tailored to us (for example she said yakult was particularly important for women on the pill because the pill does something to your digestion).
So I would certainly advise going to your doctors if they offer this service.
Ours won't supply jabs without this appointment.0 -
My children are well travelled. I took them to Vietnam for nearly a month so they know all about beggars and peddlers and about armed guards. I'm sure this holiday in Egypt will be a doddle compared to there.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Didn't want to change discussion or cause an argument about malaria tablets
but lisyloo,I didn't 'just look up Africa on the web' it was from mine and my family members experience that we took malaria tablets when we went to Egypt.WE DID visit our GP before we went who gave us our jabs and the advise on malaria,as I said maybe things have changed in the last couple of years! incidently we were on a Nile cruise maybe that is why. Also mosquitos do not discriminate between a 2* and a 5* hotel, they will get you no matter where
Black-saturn I really do hope you enjoy the trip, sounds like your kids will be ok from what you have said, but again I was merely pointing out that the OP's child has never been abroad,so I think Egypt would be a no no for them.Debt at highest £102k

Maybe your right. Perhaps it might be wise for them to wait a couple of years if Egypt is the only option.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Well i dont think i'll be going to Egypt sometime soon then! It looks so nice in the holiday brochure as well.
Thank you so much for your advice, help and comments. Will have a little chat to my son and explain why we should't go.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on where i could take him for his first time abroad in October. I haven't a clue as i've only ever been abroad once and that was when i was nine!

Just to add a friend of mine was there a few months ago on holiday, they were taken to their resort in an armed vehicle from the airport and the same on return. They were advised not to the leave the resort. As they were all inclusive and only there for a lazy week this didn't bother them0

Minorca is very family orientated with lovely beaches0

lol You have the whole world to chose from, want to narrow it down a bit:rotfl:
October is a funny time, as many parts of the world are in their rainy seasons (December's a good time to travel imo).
What kind of things are you looking for? Do you want an educational holiday? In which case, Greece or Rome/Florence (or lots of other places in Europe are good) and the weather will still be lovely? Or something more laid back? ie. beaches & pools? lakes/mountains?
Also, what type of budget would you be working towards?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Think with an 8 year old,you can't beat Disneyland Paris,I detest theme parks but even i liked this one.Just a couple of days there then off for the sights and culture of Paris,if you want beaches what about south west France, the Languedoc is gorgeous,as you can tell I love france, also not far to go as it will be their first time abroad.Debt at highest £102k
