I'm always interested in this because runners who train a lot on treadmills are easy to spot outside as they 'tigger bounce' - I think they dont develop the same running economy because they are used to a softer surface. Switching outside must knacker your knees if you 'bounce' too much as the impacts through them will be much higher...I think treadmills have their place for most people but I wouldnt recommend anyone training exclusively on them if they want to do a race outdoors.
Anyway, it was just an aside really out of interest more than anything0 -
I think that might be exactly why I find it slower Becks - when I run outside, most of my energy is being used to move forwards, but on a treadmill I am conscious of having to propel myself upwards too/instead, which I think must use a lot more energy (haven't looked into this, it's just purely based on how it feels) per distance travelled, therefore affecting speed.
The furthest I've run on a treadmill was 7k, and I was exhausted, could literally barely step off the damn thing! :rotfl:
I also think it feels so relentless. Outside, I am in control of my pace, so I can push when I feel really good, ease off when I feel tired, which I can do on the treadmill too by changing the speed, but not with the same accuracy (ie, I can literally ease off for a few strides to recover outside, then back to full pace, whereas fiddling with buttons and watching readouts constantly is annoying and stops me getting in the zone). So I feel a lot more confident pushing myself to go a little faster outside than I do upping my speed on the treadmill.
Boredom is a factor too, as is motivation (I can get off at any time, I don't need to worry about how the hell I will get home if I stop), but that affects distance rather than speed I think.
Not sure if that makes sense from a technical point of view, but that's a gut feeling on it."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -

I wont volunteer thanksI run on a treadmill only if conditions don't allow an outdoor run (I am less keen on skating than some of you hardcore nutters
). Otherwise, I would quite happily never see a treadmill again.

I dont mind skating, its heat I dont like - I'd much rather be freezing my ears off than getting sunburn :rotfl::rotfl:

Bookie - did you get my fb request (about a week or so ago) - my initials are LD.
By the way, the new baby looks lovely and the outfit he is wearing is so sweet.
Congratulations, Lucy0
