I ask for payment within 7 days - but then as I pass a post office on my way home from work, it's not that much of a drama for me.

I used to say that I would only post on certain days - which gave the buyers the heads up about when they can expect me to post....and when they can expect to receive their package.

48 hours is a bit short a timescale, IMHO - but your buyer didn't pay until Day 5 anyway, so you were within your rights to open a dispute.
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

Thanks, I think some people are just trying to make me feel stupid, that I certainly am not! Some have said that when they see these requests on an item they choose not to bid - well my buyer didnt have to bid on my item, she did, and therefore it shows she was agreeing to what was in my listing. I really dont see what I have done wrong! Anyway, I think I am going to draw a line under this now. Thanks for your reply and thanks to everyone else for your input.

thats probably why you are finding some of the replies here harsh, because you still dont get what you've done wrong.

If you are selling on ebay you must adhere to THEIR terms and conditions not your own. As must any buyer. The listing should be used to provide information thats doesnt conflict that, ie item description, postal days, packaging info.

You have stated that "she bid on my item and therefore it shows she was agreeing to what was in my listing"
so why cant you see that by listing on ebay YOU are agreeing to their terms and as such must adhere to them ??!!??

I don't really follow you here. Why would your friend want something back to resell if you already have a buyer for it? never ever sell for other people, they don't stay your frineds for long after that especially if they want you to risk your ebay account for refusing to sell after a successful winning bid.

You cannot start an nPB on your buyer until day 4 and you cannot close it for another 4 days after that. So you are leaving yourself open to some serious issues here, and with any daft terms in your auctions you will have all the strange bidders making a beeline for you.

I put in my post that I would honour any succesful wins that hadn't paid so I am not risking my ebay account for refusng to sell after a successful winning bid, so I am not leaving myself open to serious issues.

And I don't think it is 'daft' to expect someone to pay within a requested time when it is clearly stated in the ad.

However, in hindsight, which we are all rich in, I would revert to the 4 day timeline as per the ebay T & C's as another poster has pointed out, you cannot have your own terms of trading you must adhere to ebay's.

Maybe I'm too laid back but I'd wait at least a week before taking it further. It doesn't really matter, as if they aren't planning on paying, an NPB dispute will be won. If they are a little late for whatever reason, it doesn't get their back up (and the prospect of 'I haven't received it...'). Most late payers are apologetic at this point and everything runs smoothly. :)

Think I must be part of the laid back clan too :) I dont sell very often, perhaps two or three times a year when having a clearout, but would never open a NPB dispute to early. I may send an invoice after say 3-4 days if no payment as a gentle reminder but nothing harsher.

OP, its the not buyers fault that you only want to do one post office run or have children. Maybe they forgot they had bid, maybe they were ill etc. It did deserve a neg if the person paid within 7 days.

I ask for payment within 3 - 5 working days, never had to wait that long for payment anyways, also i state in my listing Items will be sent within 5 WORKING days after payment recieved (as i cant get to post office every other day as i have small children to look after and other bits to do, And i have never had a problem in doing so

Some people i think expect to much and thigs dont to quick,

The question is what will you do if they don't post pay within 3 days? Ahhh Nothing as there is nothing you can do untill end of day 4. All it does putting that in your auction is make you look a bit clueless and more likely to get bad feedack

On day four I would send them a reminder on a message that a payment should have been recieved by now, and say that if it hadnt been recieved by day 7 (after auction finished) I would have to open a NPB. And also states if they have any problems to let me know.

There is no reason why I shouldnt, or anyone else shouldnt, state the time period in which they would prefer payment. I wouldnt be so hasty as to open a NPB on day 4 anyway so what do I care what ebays rules are.

I must admit I didnt know this rule about NPB as I have never tried to open one till at least day 7 anyway, but regardless it does not change my opinion and will NOT change how I sell on ebay. I dont state pay within 72 hours or I will open a NPB so what Im saying is right, and I dont look clueless and are am not more likely to get bad feedback as I have hundreds of feedback as a private seller all positive, and not one single bidder or buyer has commented on the payment period.

Time to get over it everyone!

You have misunderstood what the thread is concerned about, you are within the rules asking for payment is 7 days is perfectly acceptable and you don't look daft at all as buyers know you can actually open an NPB on them within that time frame. I would have no hesitation at all in buying from you, you understand the process and are working correctly within it.

It is the sellers that state payment in say 48 hours when there is nothing at all they can do to enforce that rule. I still do not understand why those sellers say that, what exactly are they going to do if buyer doesn't pay in 48 hous? As they can't insist on payment in 48 hours there is no point at all in putting it in their auctions.
