    Oh nightmare noisy neigbours:

In my student digs I was located next to a Greek (why they didnt put themall in one block like the chinese i dont know) anyhow this guy's mate were at the bell all night then going playing space invaders or whatever on his beafed up computer. God he was a nightmare, only turned it down for day or so then back up again. Thank goodness i spent a lot time at my partner's house.

I then moved into a local house after finishing uni n the next door nighbours adopted lads used chase the poor mother around the house in middle night beating her up. All you could hear was the chase, up down stairs, things flying about, heads banging on the windows. Was crazy, i moved to the city then n it was much quieter......

The house next to ours is always rented out to students who go to a Uni very near here. The ones there right now are not too bad but last year's lot were dreadfully noisy. Our local council are very good when it comes to loud music and deal with it swiftly but banging doors, running up and down stairs, shouting, and weight training(believe it or not) in the middle of the night disturbing our sleep could not be controlled.

I would think 11 pm is late enough for loud music but really they shouldn't be playing it so loud that neighbours can't carry on with their lives. I've tried knocking on the door to ask them to turn it down but the music was so loud that they couldn't hear the door (or maybe they didn't want to answer it LOL)

When I was living in barracks in Germany,I was on a Tornado bomber squadron, one day we got off shift around 8am & after a breakfast in the mess,I & the other's on my shift went to bed,all single man rooms, about an hour later some muppett in the room accross from me,turned his stereo on,playing Betty Boo (yes, even after 15 odd years I can still remember the horrid tune!
I heard one of the lads,a big Geordie, knock on the door & ask the occupant to turn his music down.
He did for about ten minutes & then it went back up...
Next thing, geordie banged on the door.."Reet..turn it doon or else!"...
Which he did for a few more minutes...next I heard the sounds of a door being booted in & a cricket bat liberally being applied to the occupants stereo system!

My neighbour 3 doors down plays drums for 2-3 hours continuously most days and evenings ... yes 3 doors down and I still can't revise for my uni exams or hear TV over his drums...

Tried EH but they want a diary before doing anything and then they never wrote back after I sent them that..

ANY loud noise at ANY time is totally unacceptable from neighbours - and..yep...I do practice what I preach in that respect (other than - necessity level only - of DIY noise during the daytime if one HAS to).

One is supposed to have "peace and quiet" within one's own home.

If someone is "allowing" for selfish neighbours playing loud music at some points - then one has to go by "How many hours of peace and quiet do people need to get in their 8 hours sleep a night?" - which would then mean a MINIMUM of 10pm-6am of said peace and quiet. Otherwise the selfish neighbours would be not just preventing the peace and quiet we are all entitled to - but not even allowing their neighbour to have a proper nights sleep.

My neighbours are noisy during the week - I wouldn't mind it so much at the weekend as I don't have to get up early for work. They are a couple of teenagers who live with their dad and their dad works abroad Monday-Thursday hence the noise during the week. They invite their friends round and I hear the constant music and shouting to be heard above the music, along with them shouting in the garden (my bedroom is that side of the house).

I had a word with them sometime back and they were very apologetic. Their dad then came round to see me when he was home and couldn't apologise enough and told me shout at them if they do it again. They do make a noise still but always stop the music and shouting at 10.30pm so I don't really have a problem with them any more.

I felt a bit guilty telling them off as I was young once and didn't want to be a party pooper but noise in the early hours during the week was a bit over the top.

This is the trouble with living in terraced houses with lettuce leaf thin walls. I can hear my other neighbours' washing machine but don't complain as we all have to do washing and it's during the day and she can probably hear mine.

My upstairs neighbours used to come home and think it was a great idea to run around the flat screaming at each other at 3am after clubbing until I set my alarm to go off at 5.30am and then 'forgot' to turn it off, so seeing as I was up, I made some toast but 'accidently' burnt it, which set off the fire alarm which I 'struggled' to turn off, so then thought I may as well hoover thoughout my flat, sadly I 'seemed' to bang the hoover into every wall. But thats okay cos I could put a wash in the washing machine and it 'happened' to be the load that needed the extra long rinse! All before 7am. Helped no end with their hangovers, and 3 years later they still manage to come home quitely EVERY time! :D

In the deeds to my flat it specifies no loud noise/music after 11pm, and no laminate flooring. If I'm watching telly etc I'm really aware of this time limit and put the amp into 'night mode' which kills the bass.

The 11pm curfew doesn't help with the loud clumping footsteps I have to endure from the current tenants of the flat above (they must walk funny as previous tenants have been much quieter) as they're entitled to walk, but it drives me up the wall sometimes with their stamping back and forth for hours on end!

Why not very kindly ask them if theyd be a little quieter after this limit, say in the day its fine and not noticeable but at night with no other noise it can be distracting from sleep and just ask that if theyre not already doing so, that they step lightly.

Maybe also ask if theyre ok with the noise from your flat so they get a chance to reciprocate any feelings giving you both incentive to help out.

We've got noisy neighbors too. Unfortunately we live in an old house, so when the kids are running around upstairs it sounds like a herd of elephants. Very annoying when that wakes us up 2hrs before our alarms do.

    My tips:
    1. Despite other comments here, DO NOT go straight to environmental health. It think that's really rude & confrontational. At least try talking to them first to try to come up with a solution. If that fails, then consider further action.
    2. Don't leave notes, my god, it's something students do.
A letter might be suitable if you've spoken to them first, especially if you copy in the land lord (if appropriate), but I'd still rather speak face to face.
    3. Two rights DO NOT make a wrong. While you might find it satisfying to give them "pay back" through making nise yourself, it will only weaken your case should you try to resolve the problem.
