Used to love Radio Ulster as the only decent local speech radio station we have in Northern Ireland. Sadly, ever since they rejigged the presenters recently, I've switched off. Karen Patterson, Conor Bradford and the dullest of the dull, Mark Carruthers, lack the chemistry in the mornings on Good Morning Ulster. Nolan is boring now as it's the same contributors time and time again (John O'Dowd, Jeffrey Donaldson, Jean from Ballygowan....) Still love Gerry Anderson and Talkback just isn't the same without David Dunseith.

Music radio in Northern Ireland is crap.

Shaun Doherty hasn't too much music even worse than Nolan, Frank and Jeremy Vine and that is saying something :rotfl:

Used to love George Jones on Radio Ulster but feel since he went onto U105 he has got really selfcentered.(IMHO) He used to seem genuinely interested in others and local talent. Wish they would replace him with Ivan Martin then it would be great all day long.

Have to agree with that, all that "all right there mate" crap is really annoying too, plus the constant Club Sound reminiscing

Anyway back to the OP's question U105 to a point Radio Ulster for news and traffic NEVER Downtown, Cool or Shttybeat. Then rather than local it is the national Radio 2 or 2FM which works well as Ken Bruce is great craic whereas Gerry Ryan is so boring and predictable.

If you are in the Ballymena area there is always Seven FM :rotfl:. Once described to me as being like your least cool uncle broadcasting his own eclectic record collection out of the garage. And who could argue with that?

Also has on the hour news which is creepy in its local-ness - if they are reporting that someone was mugged or something, instead of saying it was on the XXXX Road or whatever, they nearly tell you what house he was walking past at the time and who looked out the window and saw it. Hilarious. (not the mugging, obviously, just the reporting thereof).
  • Tend to listen to U105. The standard of broadcasting is much better than its rival Cool FM.
Today FM is good in the south
  • Fair play to Citybeat, they're the only ones who had up-to-date information later on in the evening of the flooding in August '08. Radio Ulster and the others were useless, just carried on in their merry way as if nothing had happened.

Just gone form Radio 2 to Radio 4 as I cant stand !!!!head Evans and I think Radio 4 is brilliant, everytime I turn on there is something really interesting. I don't do commercial radio as I don't do adverts in any form, especially "we buy any car" sort of !!!!!!.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I have got to hear that sometime!!

I hate commercial radio, don't like ads or their limited playlists (although Radio 1 can be tedious with their repetitive playing of the Top 40 in peak time). I also detest local DJs like Sonia Mac and Sarah Brett with their fake weirdo accents (where the hell are they from??????).

My faves are Radio Ulster (esp Nolan, Gerry Anderson and Talkback - Wendy is unexepctedly better than David Dunseith, I love her!) and Radios 2 and 4. John Humphrys et al are excellent.

I like talk radio, as you can probably tell.

The adverts, while of course are a necessity to commercial radio do seem to be particularly bland when you get to any of the local stations but I suppose that all comes down to the budget (of the advertisers).

The playlists seem an interesting subject, you notice the same songs getting played repeatedly over a long period, on U105 someone clearly likes Tom Petty (both with the Heartbreakers and the Wilburys) as he's always being played even though its years since he had a hit and I would hardly ever hear him on Radio 2.

The kids were listening to the Charts on Radio 1 tonight and I was surprised the top 10 had quite a few songs you dont hear on 105. That said I never listen to Coolfm so maybe they play the top10 all the time.

As someone said at the start of the thread "I must be getting old" :D and/or too much time on my hands.
