Hey.
I am going to muscle my way in as well.
My OH and I have been saying for a couple of years now we would like to grow our own veg, but with us only renting, we weren't allowed to dig up the garden. We moved into our first bought house last June, but with decorating and other DIY tasks, we left it too late, but we are starting this year.
We only want to start with a few bits and pieces, potatoes, leeks, cabbages and maybe some tomatoes. Mainly to see how it goes.
We are also getting 3/4 Hens at the start of April so that will give us some eggs.
It's all looking good0 -
hey everyone,
I am a newbie too.
Last year i grew:
Carrots in tub - were tiny, not very successful
Brocoli - got eaten by butterflies
Raspberries - very succesful
Strawberries - reasonably succesful
Peppers - dont think i repotted quick enough
Tomatoes - reasonably succesful but dried up when neighbours watered whilst on holiday
Cucumbers - some good ones but slugs got to them
So this year i am planning on creating raised beds from railway sleepers, any tips
Also is there anything i should be planting now?0 -
I would like to join too please. For the last two years I have grown strawberries and tomatoes in hanging baskets, and was really pleased with them. Unfortunately last year the birds ate strawberries from one of the baskets, guess I will have to get some bird nets this year.
I would like to grow some veg in pots/tubs/growbags this year, so will be reading others posts avidly. Thank you..
I have noticed that Lidl will be having fruit trees in from Thursday, would love to try one or two of those.0 -
Hi, i will be reading this thread regularly. I have just bought a walk in green house from morrisons for £25. I don't know how good it will be. It is a metal frame with plastic cover. I also got a 0.75 m square bed for £10 and two 0.55 m round planters (2 for £7.50) for the fruit trees I am going to buy at Lidl tomorrow. May need some advice on how to plants these tomorrow.Without overpayments: 15 years, 1 monthsBecause of overpayments: 10 years, 10 months left until paid off0

Hi all, we are shortly going to be building some raised beds in our back garden and also will be having a go at growing some other bits in containers (have previously grown dwarf beans, tomatoes, strawberries which have been okish). Popped into town today and thought i'd treat myself to the Alan Titchmarsh book from WH Smith as it was on offer for £9.99. It went through the till for £6! Made my day
Got a mini greenhouse thing, 4 tier, £12 in wilkinsons and some seeds but just getting a list together for everything else really.0 -
I just wanted to say i think this thread is going to be my favourite this year! Having no-one like minded near me, it is great to read about so many others having the same thoughts, trials and tribulations as me! I no longer feel alone in my growing grub quest and look forward to reading this as soon as I switch the p.c on!
So thanks all for being my gardening angels! :A2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!

Went into Morrisons after work today to see if I could buy the buckets - it had gone 4 o'clock (so thought I had no chance)
There were loads - yellow sticker read 8 for 99p but there were 9 buckets in each one, so I got 18 buckets for £1.98. Thanks for the advice - going to thumb through seed catalogues tomorrow.

I'm almost a newbie - I started last year and am going to have a proper go this year!
I'm planning on:
Carrots
Beans
Potatoes (got the seed pots ready to go)
Peas
Toms
Peppers (got those started already)
Lettuce
Beetroot
.... and maybe some other things too!0 -
Hi everyone can I join in too........
I try at gardening but my OH is the keen gardener. We started a squarefoot garden last year and did well with some carrots, radishes, beetroot and some lettuce. Then the rains came and everything got waterlogged and died. Also we had some new potatoes that sprouted and we planted in a large Ikea blue bag that did quite well.
So this year we have made another larger wooden raised bed and are looking to expand our trials.
I like the idea of cucumber, peppers, parsnips, Leeks, Onions, garlic to name but a few...... We also have some potatoes that we are waiting to chit?? (I hope that is the right word)
I got some funky carrot seeds off a seller on ebay so hopefully my carrots will be purple, red and white just to make them a little more intresting
after reading your thread I popped to my local wilko's today but they had run out of potato planters so I hope they will get some more in. I will also look at getting some of the morrisons planters as they sound good value for starting things off and smaller plants.
I look forward to seeing/hearing what everyone is doing and planting.

newbies what have you done/ are doing? :j
Would love to learn along with other newbies
Terrific idea! Thanks so much for posting! I'm a vegetarian and I have recently discovered a passion for cooking and I go through a lot of veg and i would like to grow my own veg and herbs to save money.
I have no experience but would like to grow:
peppers
onions
carrot
garlic
and about ten culinary herbs
I use a lot of aubergines, courgettes, and celery but think these may take up too much room. I'm not hugely ambitious this first year and an success will suit me to be honest. The most important veg, for me, is the peppers.
I shall follow the thread with great interest! :beer:0
