looks nice & colourful & they are £3 in asda at the moment! guess where i'm off to at lunch
I'm growing carrots in these this year. I may need to stand them on something though, to make sure that the water can drain from the holes I've drilled in the bottom.0 -

Potatoes seems like an excellent place to start as we get through loads
Love the idea of the tubs - sorry for the silly question - but do you plant them with seed potatoes? How many would you put in an what happens then?? Do you have to do much with them?
Told you I was a novice!!
Thankyou
Be warned, you won't get a massive crop of potatoes from a couple of tubs. I grew some last year. It was good to do, but they were all used very quickly!0 -
OOOOH I love the idea of the toilet roll tubes and Thanks WestonDave that was also a great idea of the 4 pint milk funnel :T Genius!!
How soon should we start sweetcorn? Is it a little too soon yet ?
Shame I live so far from Ikea as I would love some of those stripey bags they would really brighten up my balcony
Might have to sweet talk OH to go up on sunday but Ikea on a sunday is hell :eek:Restarting C25K in 2014 - Week 8 - 1/3 completed
Need to loose 25lb / 3lb lost so far0 -
Evening All,
I am going to try growing my own this year. I'm off out this weekend for seeds (local farmers market) and am hoping to grow:
carrots
lettuce
tomatoes
potatoes
parsley
thyme
and see how we go from there. Everything will have to be done in pots so will be keeping an eye on everyones tips and what does and doesn't work on here0 -
For anyone on the look out there are 3 packs of peas and 3-pack of beans in £land.
The beans include borlotti, runner and broad. I mainly bought for the borlotti but might do a couple of the others as well to try
Peas - early onward, a sugar snap, and something else i probably wont bother with. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
oohh my son and I are newbies to growing! can we join you all please?
We are attempting
potatoes
carrots
chillis
peppers
toms
cabbages
cauliflowers
Maybe we are starting with too much, i dunno lol0 -
wilkinson must be english, I've never heard of them. You can grow old sprouted potatoes if you stick them separately in a tub or bag, I did that last year.:D
Wilkos is like an institution for some of us! Lol. :rotfl: It has been around forever, and is the most popular shop here in Derby.
If you look on the website Mardatha, i think you can order from them to have home delivered, even in Scotland.
Well worth a look, they are really good value and often the stuff is good quality - unlike some cheaper shops where as soon as you get the stuff home it breaks!:mad:2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!
2010 - Attempting to make my garden a beautiful place for dd2 to enjoy!0 -
Hi all,
I too am new to this growing lark and have been reading this forum for the past few weeks.
Last friday me and the kids sowed some seeds in a propergater. We sowed
cress (2 inch high)
peas (1 cm shoots coming up)
chillis (no sign of anything yet!)???
peppers (no sign of anything yet!)???
radish (2 inch high)
tomatoes (just starting to sprout)
leaf salad lettuce (2 inch high)
potatoes (chitting)
ok well all seems to be going well, however the cress, radish and lettuce have gone wild they are now touching the top of the propergater!
What do i do? Should i repot them into the containers i'm planning on putting outside and just keep the on the kitchen windowsill till it warms up?
Thanks in advance xx
Heres hoping the sun comes soon!!!!!0 -
