    Hi all :hello:

First attempt at growing fruit and veg this year, well almost, my first attempt was a few tomato plants that were monumentally bad because I forgot to pinch out then forgot to feed them so I just had some rather attractive green foliage with nothing on it!

    This year I am planting:

    Dwarf runner bean - Hestia
    Lettuce - Tintin
    Beetroot - Pablo F1
    Cauliflower - Avalnche
    Potato - Rocket
    Potato - Pink fur apple
    Raspberry - Autumn Bliss

Everything except the raspberries will be in containers that I already had knocking around or in the case of the spuds some Marshalls Gro-sacks that FIL kindly gave me so I bought decent vegetable compost and vemiculite to help with retaining moisture.

Because we live in the North West I wanted to try stuff that is a bit more cold tolerant than peppers and aubergines etc so I don't get to disheartened :D

Planted my cauli seeds in modular containers of Westland organic vegetable compost with a little vermiculite mixed in and left them on the kitchen windowsill, 1 week later I have 6 small shoots coming up, yay!

I have some Nemaslug on order, used it previously in the borders of the garden and it was amazing how few slugs and snails we got so fingers crossed my lettuce and spuds will stay slug-free ;)

We also have a very old apple tree that was in a terrible state when we moved in and produced 1 apple! So after a hefty pruning and treatment for apple canker it produced a huge crop but all were riddled with coddling moth so we treated it last year and have applied grease bands to the trunk to see if we can get some edible fruit this year, fingers crossed.

Good luck all, hopefully posting here will remind me to water and feed everything at the right time :D

Also our neighbourhood is full of cats and despite us having a dog they still use our garden as a toilet. I don't want to use any chemicals etc to stop them, as I want my veg to be organic. What can I use to deter them?
    Thanks

They have to pooh somewhere, bless them! They don't know you're trying to grow veg on their toilet!

I find it interesting that you would use chemicals to deter cats were it not that you want organic veg.....:rotfl:Putting plastic stakes, like straws only stiffer in yer veg patch will keep them away and not harm them.

I am going to wilkinsons tomorrow, thanks for the tip on the potato planters, ill look out for them.

I know its off topic but I just noticed your sig Alli, well done on the weight loss! I have been recording mine in my DFW Diary, ill keep checking your sig for inspiration.

Thanks very much I update it every wednesday ........ Good luck with your loss too :)

My OH has been a busy boy today and planted our Chillies and peppers. Also some corriander, parsley, basil. Also started a cucumber and a melon on the front windowsill in toilet roll tubes.

Fingers crossed that things will start to sprout in the next few weeks

  • Hey guys! After being paid yesterday....went out to a few places to get my veg seeds....

The dear fella and me went to Homebase, where we picked up:

    Runner Beans
    Tomatoes
    Potatoes- Charlottes
    Mushrooms
    Gooseberry bush
    Rasperry bush
    Beetroot

All of this seemed ok. Other half just pointed out that seeing this was our first year, we shouldn't go too mad.

Well.....that's until we went to Wilkos...they have a fantastic offer. All of their veg seeds (Wilko brand) are either 3 for £1.50 or 3 for £2.50. So we then ended up buying

    Carrots
    Parsnips
    Cabbage
    Sweetcorn
    Leeks
    Brussell Sprouts!

So I am going to be very busy this year. The only annoying thing at the moment, I live just near Bradford, and we have had that much rain and snow over the past week, that the ground is terrible. So we are hoping that next week, the weather will pick up and I can get the majority of them in the ground!

I'm sure this will be on the forum somewhere but I sowed my sweet peppers and chilli seeds last weekend (they're on my kitchen windowsill in a small propagator type thing) - can anyone tell me how long they may take to germinate please? I bought a small pepper plant last year and so didn't actually sow them then.

I also sowed some microgreens last weekend and they're coming on a treat.

Was going to go to Wilkinsons today to get one of their little 'greenhouses' but I dislocated my knee on Thursday and now I'm hobbling around on crutches! At least I can still water the stuff I did sow :D
  • ouch kimmee! Are you ok? That sounds terribly painful. Make sure you rest up well.

OH has been working hard again today on making my lovely raised bed for me :D I have spent this week planning and re-planning my square foot garden plan over and over... think I have finally settled on a plan that I am happy with (for now).

Can't wait to get sowing outside once it's warm enough (I too live in the North West). I have some seedling coming up indoors, which is very exciting!
