  • My husband bought me some seed potatoes, earlies and maincrop. I'm not sure if I have to wait till the frosts are finished to plant them or if the earlies can go in and hope the frosts are over by the time the green shoots are showing?
They are happily chitting in egg boxes at the moment. I'm North West too!

Another North West girly here too!

I'll be joining in on this... only thing we grew successfully (thanks to cats and slugs killing everything else) was courgettes, rhubarb and about 5 strawberries :rotfl: Oh and due to neglect of the garden had lots and lots of blackberries at the back of the garden that were scrummy!:o:D

Think this year we will try for

    Lettuce
    Tomatoes
    Courgettes
    Strawberries
    Potatoes
    Blackberries

Need to really sort myself out though as i havent started anything! :o

Ive put mine in yesterday I have british guard whuich had the longest "chit" on, thr charlottes have barely got started. I planted the 3 with the longest chits in in a pop up waste containers. A followed the instructions in Titchmarsh for VERY EARLYS. They are in my unheated roof room with fleece on the top secured with elastic. ( also warming my compost for future sowings)

I definatley NEED to buy this book it is very comprehensive. Someone on here said they got it for 6.00 the other day in Smiths, so I'm going to see if I can get one too.

Absolutely bucketing it down here in London, there wont be much doing today but we are going to the museum of garden history as there is a seed fair on. I can sense Im going to buy more "stuff".

I looked at my first seedling now the first leaves have opened up in the propagator. :j im so excited about this!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I'm sure this will be on the forum somewhere but I sowed my sweet peppers and chilli seeds last weekend (they're on my kitchen windowsill in a small propagator type thing) - can anyone tell me how long they may take to germinate please?

    7-10 days.

Now can anybody tell me when I should be taking them out of the propagator and moving them to individual pots?

I'm sure we can piece it together between us :D

I repotted when the second set of leaves arrived, I opened the vent at the top when the first leaves opened. This may be completly wrong, I am making it up as I go along :rotfl::rotfl:

ouch kimmee! Are you ok? That sounds terribly painful. Make sure you rest up well.

Thanks Pink_numbers - yes it was very painful but I'm ok and have no alternative but to rest up!!

Thanks Plasticman and lunar - I should find tiny seedlings any day now, well heres hoping! It's very exciting isn't it? Can't wait till I can get more of my seeds sown in a couple of weeks.

LYNZPOWER-Do get the Titmarsh book it is good. I got my copy at WHSmiths for £10 reduced from £20 i noticed someone on here got theres scanned through at £6 i wasn't that lucky but i think mine has paid for itself already the amount of time i have used it for reference.
  • I've just spend the morning shovelling the contents of the compost bin into our raised beds, I'm so excited, OH has done a really fab job on building the beds.

Hi, I follow this thread every day and am a newbie to gardening. Started last yr to try to encourage my young daughter to get moving as she has some trouble with joints and muscles. We are both hooked !!!
had many failures last year and a few sucess stories, esp tomatoes, sweet peas and broad beans grown from seed :-)
Note to self this year, not to sow ALL my seeds and sow things i like,,,obvious now i think about it!!!! We had huge amounts of toms and broad beans and we all hate broad beans !!
So some forward planning this year!
We have things on the go indoors:-
in 2 windowsill propergators (unheated cheap from wilkinsons)
4 types of tomatoes,,,6 of each seed
12 carrot seeds -freebie with magazine

    in heated prop from b & q
    hot chilli seeds
    sweet pepper seeds

in unheated prop from b &q
sweet pea seeds (saved from last year just pushing thru :T
kitchen windowsil- basil seeds (one up)
various pelagorium/geranium cuttings repotted and doing well although no flowers been growing them on for last 6mnths or more,,,must either have to wait for flowers??? or take summin off plant? like u do with toms? will try waiting till i hear otherwise LOl

Outside in one of those 4 tier shelve plastic greenhouse thingys
lettuce seeds doing ok bit straggly
one rescued strwberry plant from a pot
one rescued cutting of unknown plant

    In Garden
    garlic,,,all pushing thru soil:j

crocus last yr bulbs up and looking lovely
white rose planted 3 yrs ago
yellow rose planted last yr looking very sorry for itself :(
lavender in pot straggly and never pruned
rhubarb, planted 7yrs ago,,fabulous have loads of rhubarb from it
herb bucket still has parsley (bit yellow) and some thyme in it everything else died (i think)

its sooooooooo addictive and I am really enjoying gardening /pottering

This is my first year of attempting to grow ANYTHING ever! I shall be using tubs and containers and a raised bed. I shall be attempting to grow potatoes, carotts, onions, leeks, tomatoes, courgettes, rhubarb, beetroot, lettuce and peas. I feel exhausted just remembering them all, let alone growing them. I figure that if I plant enough of everything, something has to grow out of that lot, surely?
