Took me a while to read through the latest pages.
My BBC dig in salad bowl seeds have sprouted and has took about 7-10 days. The carrots have sprouted so much, can't believe their progress!! Now to ind some info about thinning out, I don't think I've sowed them very well will have get rid of quite a few!!Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0 -
aarrgghh.. just got in from work for OH to tell me that my cold frame from b&q went walk out all over garden last night - was sooo windy!!! nightmare. Think I'm going to have to superglue the thing together when there's a break in this weather.. really annoyed!!0

Turbo - is it ok to sow butternut squash this early? My packet says May, which I did last year but got very poor results. When I read your post I thought that maybe I'd left it too late last year.GC July £250/0

Hooray....my carrots that i planted out in pots about 6 weeks ago are just beginning to show their new shoots, i had given up hope on them (it could be that i sowed them outside in large pots, and just left them out).
My spring onions are a problem, sowed in modules on window sill, they sprouted really quickly, just 1 shoot which looks like a blade of grass, but they have all flopped over, although the shoots are still green it's like they are not strong enough to hold themselves upright. Should i just leave them abit longer to see whay happens, or bin them and start again?0 -

Oh blimey  glad I've kept my little wilko cheapy greenhouse inside, it would never have survived.Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0 -
I have put them in the green house and it has a heater in there. If you do them indoors they are ok to plant march, april and out side from may. I just ran down the garden to check glad it has stopped raining here.
Brilliant! Thanks Turbo, I'll sow them over the weekend and keep them in my conservatory (if I can find room!!!).
Isn't the weather awful - roll on summer :rotfl:0 -

Glad you posted this about your carrots mine are in my raised bed and nothing's happening at the mo. It's been about 3 weeks, so I live in hope. I've also got spring onions in my raised bed.0 -
Wow, this thread just speeds along!! A BIG welcome to the newbies!
Silvertoes – Welcome!!!Spaghetti squash? I’m definitely googleing that!
Toni_ Welcome!!!I think you can pretty much sow anything now as you’re in Norfolk and it should be warm enough down there.
Annie12 – open the greenhouse in summer and give plenty of ventilation. if it’s too hot for you they won’t like it either!:(
Oldskoolretro – potatoes apparently go out Easter weekend or April 9th! Mine are desperate to get out there!:o
Wssla00 – I am jealous of your lettuce and I neither grow nor eat the stuff!:rotfl:
Elantan – I have only started sowing in the last week with toms and cucs. The rest of my sowing won’t be till mid-late April. I will be doing; onions, sweetcorn, parsnip, carrots, spring onions, potatoes, peas, cabbage, Brussels, and I forget what else. Oh no, I did sow Brussels and peas last week too, but gonna do successional with them.
I think it will be interesting to see how well each of us fares over the season with us all sowing at different times. Who knows, maybe by sowing later we will get really good bumper harvests! Half the fun is learning from mistakes (or successes!! ):rotfl:
Princesswoo – Welcome !!!wow! What a great start!
Beckstrous – go to scaffold companies, they give old boards away free! I’m kicking myself cos Deborah services(no affil) in Sheffield just got rid of 1600 boards! Not that I wanted 1600 but still….. I coulda driven up there and picked up enough for the extra beds I want in the garden and for the 8 beds I want at the lottie! Grrrr. Oh and yes u can move raspberries next year, but before new growth starts.
Littlestars - Welcome!!!wow you are so organised I feel useless! In store they have stickers on that say £6.00 for tichys book. Have u tried putting it in your basket online and going through to the checkout? Maybe it is discounted there?
Oh roll on the Easter hols and good weather! I am ITCHING to get out and sow!! :rotfl:
.2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!
2010 - Attempting to make my garden a beautiful place for dd2 to enjoy!0 -
went for a visit to a garden centre today ... how do the rest of you find these places ? i felt so overwhelmed today ... almost went into a panic ... i was looking about and found things i didnt even have a clue i would need ...like a thing that you put around the base of your fruit trees in october and feb to stop some pest invading your trees... so my trees might now get invaded yikes ...
and then there was a seed thingy to put the seeds in ... apparently to space them out better or something
ok i know i wont need most of this stuff .. but what if i do need some stuff and i just dont have anything ... do i need a fleece? or enviromesh ? if so how much
that's why this site is so good ...and this thread brilliant ...i can come on here and ask the seemingly stupid questions and i can learn as i go ...with the understanding that this year yes i will have some produce ...but this year is more about the learning process0 -

Parnsip definitely, cabbage (depends on variety) can be started too.
Peas you need to sow a lot (you don't get very much from a pea plant) and don't need to successional sow sprouts, you pick them off from the bottom to the top. (well, if you get them. mine were all gnashed by bugs last year)
It's a bit early for cucumber unless you're going to put them into a greenhouse?
Definitely the winner this year is to sow later. It's SO COLD out there still0
