Personally I would put off making raised beds now until the autumn - by the time you get the timber, build them and then fill them, its going to eat into your growing time and as you say you can't plant things and then raise the beds!
(Gravel boards are basically a treated plank of wood designed to go at the bottom of a fence panel, partly to stop any gravel you might have drifting under the fence, and partly to be the bit that is in contact with the ground and therefore potentially rotting - the idea is that its cheaper to replace the gravel board than the whole panel. Anyway you can buy them in 6ft or 8ft lengths, about 6 inches across for a couple of quid each in Wickes - I tend to buy 6, cut two in half for 3ft ends, and use them to build a one foot tall raised bed. Wickes also do short "pegs" which are a small wooden post with a sharpened end - ideal for the corners. Job done for about £20 per bed)Adventure before Dementia!0 -
Good day to you all!
We have spouting going on here! Isn't it exciting! The chilli's, rocket and pak choi are coming on very nicely as are the freebie Lakeland salad leaves. No sign of toomatoes or peppers just yet though.
I have only lived in this house for 6 months so don't know what the slug situation is like but I saw a little blighter on the school walk.
I have grass, decking, pepples and patio in my garden so no ground growing for me so it's growbag city with the odd cheap pot!
I'm not going to do it this year but next year I wanted to try some carrots - can I grow carrots in pots?0 -

Just when I think I can't plant anymore, more free seeds arrive. This time from Britain on Show, Beetroot and Spinach. Now where can I start growing these?0

Argh! Are the tips still showing or have you buried them completely??
As long as the tips are showing you're ok. Water in dryspells until mid august then stop cos it can stunt the maturity after that.
(Google is my best friend) :rotfl:
Buried completely! I'll leave em and see how they go. They're very loosely covered.
Can i reuse the sets afterwards? Was hoping to use a couple of sets to restock and then eat all the rest now what to do with an assortment of onions......mmmmm onion marmalade and chutney for starters me thinks!0 -
I put a load of coriander seeds in a long planter about October time and they didn't germinate at all. So I just stuck the planter outside and left it out through all the snow etc. I was going to empty it and use it for something else but never got around to it.
I couldn't believe it when I went out yesterday and there is a lovely green sea of little coriander seedlings peeking up!
By the way, I just buy a big bag of coriander seeds (about 60p for 100g or something) from a local Asian grocer and they work fine. My friend showed me her packet of about 50 seeds bought for £1.68!!!!! I have about a million seeds!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D
