Thanks Gazza - think I'd better start making pots now, crikey I didn't dream they would produce so few peas! How close can you plant them? I was going grow them in pots but I may have to think again!

My dad always used to say that peas werent worth bothering with as you only got one decent boiling, but the one year he tried them I ate most of them before they made it to the pan. They are yummy.

BUT Im quite tempted to grow some as we like the pea shoots in salad. If you grown them for pea shoots is any variety suitable? Anyone done this?

Ive just sowed some courgettes on windowsill, I havent had much luck in the past. Something nicked the seeds out of my coldframe last time. My dad usually has more than he can deal with though!

Ive also sowed lots of herbs: coriander, basil, parsley and mint.

I tend to just go with what the packet says give or take a bit dependent upon what room you have. They also need staking a bit or something to climb up.

You can do them in pots i suspect - a 12" pot maybe 5 plants at a guess? maybe someone who has done in pots can say better.

They are nice to just eat raw straight from the pob but personally im not growing any. Get a much much heavier crop from runner beans - these are one of my favourite veg as you can cut new beans almost every day. Plus any extra freezes really well

Good morning all - another newbie - I'm just starting off this year with lettuce, spring onions, raddishes, strawberries and cherry tomatoes. Am just going to plant in pots this year, as we have quite a few rabbits in the garden, and don't think they would stand a chance in the ground until I've fenced off an area - probably project for next year.

I decided on cherry tomatoes. as we live in Scottish highlands, on west coast and as we don't always get the best of summers!!!! thought they stood the best chance of ripening.

Looking forward to reading posts on this thread, getting some advice and seeing how everyone else is doing.

For those starting pumpkins and cucumbers and such like, please please remember they don't like any frost at all! If you have no space for to keep them somewhere nice and warm, they won't survive :)

I'm bored of waiting for nice weather. The plants in the greenhouse look a right state as I got excited and planted them out earlier. Might bin a lot of them and start again as they won't be healthy. :(

The blueberries from wilko's have leaves :j :j

Too bad it's windy and grey here today.

I think i grew about 50 pea plants last year and still only got a couple of meals worth (for 4 of us)

Agreed. I prefer to grow mangetout (oregon sugar snaps). They give a very high crop and you can leave them to mature until the peas in the pod are almost bursting out.

Thanks to all for advice and comments about peas - well I got the seeds this year so I'll use them all up and try runner beans and mangetout next year.

I just went out in the garden and just when I thought nothing was going to happen with them, all of my garlic have started pushing through :D, my first daff has flowered and my Dig-In seeds arrived about 5 minutes ago :j:j:j

I just got my dig in seeds and two packs of seeds from RHS with a big advice pack!:D

Both had carrots in so it's lucky thats dd2's favourite veg to sow grow and eat!:D

Weather's supposed to be nice here tomorrow so i'll be sowing carrots, onion sets, spring onions, picking final places for my pear tree and victoria plum tree, and sowing peas in trays. I did toms and cucs a few days ago just on the windowsill (sf) above the radiator. :D

I can't stop grinning :D - it finally feels like spring is really on it's way and i can get going full speed in the garden! ......What is wrong with me?!?!....:rotfl:

For any newbies with kids - get them involved!

Not only do they gain a better understanding of where the food on their dinner plate actually comes from (ie. not a supermarket shelf) but they will definitely WANT to eat more vegetables! And the taste is SO much better! :A
