my potatoes have chitted nicely but i cant plant them out yet as still too cold. they are on the windowsill in the kitchen, would i be better moving them to the (unheated) greenhouse until April, leave them where they are and hope they dont shrivel and die or put them in the dark and cool -somewhere like the shed?0 -

You can start growing them now under fleece in your green house if you are using containers?
See titchmarsh "very earlies" Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Just had a long overdue session in the roof-room. Its pretty cold in there.
However, I have the poking through of 2 of the 4 of my peas I potted 2 weeks ago. I think i can see a tiny poke-through of a spring onion.
We potted up seeds today- tomatoes, green patty pan, courgette - bush, and perpetual spinach and a successional of spring onions- living in hope on these! These are tucked up under a bit of fleece, snuggled in some bits ogf bubble wrap
Was a bit too dark to take any pics but I hope to get up there tomorrow to see whats there. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Right I have taken my seed potatoes out of the packet now and stood them in an eggbox. How long should I expect to leave em like that till? I am thinking I will plant them Easter Monday does that sounds about right? We are hoping to build a couple more raised beds this weekend and will be ordering a load of topsoil and compost so might have it delivered for Easter to take advantage of the long weekend.0

you leave them until they have started sprouting. You want thick chunky green/purple stems, not the thin skinny pale ones.
We're not planting till Easter anyways, but even then still hoping the frosts will be over by then. Have you worked out the costs of building the raised beds and ordering in the soil and compost? For the first year, OH dug up the turf and turned the soil over, we dug in a bit of fish, blood and bone and then planted. You don't need raised beds to grow vegetables.0
