I've just been out in the garden to sow my peas in the newspaper pots that I made yesterday, they are now on a sunny windowsill in the conservatory - do they need to be covered (I have some plastic lids from my mini propogator) does anyone know?
It was lovely in the garden - some of my daffs haven't just pushed through, they look like they are almost going to bloomand while I was pruning the rose bush a huge bumble bee flew down to the crocuses, made me think that spring really is almost here :j

Guys - just remember there is loads of time to have frosts yet which could ruin all the hard work your doing.
Remember to protect things if a cold night is due.0 -
Deffo agree. I am fleecing up everything at night and the outdoor stuff ( carrots and perp spinach ) is permanently covered with the fleece to stop the birds getting at the seed. The unheated greenhouse has everything fleeced overnight- sometimes in the day too, depending how cold it is and also whether I remember to take it off or not. lol:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I've bit the bullet and done some outdoor planting!
I've done some seeding in pots this afternoon, peas in guttering, carrots, round turnips and long beetroot in tubs. They are all covered with fleece in my unheated greenhouse.
The seeds I have in the house are really taking off, so may need to repot some shortly. Running out of windowsills though, and also trying to keep cats off the window sills enjoying the sunshine.0 -
Well I finally made it to Ikea this week and got some of those lovely coloured bag planters. They also did small ones which will be perfect for my herbs.
OH has been planting our onions today so lets hope the cold nights won't kill them too much........ Also found some daff's I forgot to plant so we have planted them in a pot so I will have some late flowering ones.
Spring is on it's way as my hayfever has startedI think it is tree pollen that is getting me at the moment. How ironic a gardener with hayfever!!
Where have most people got thier fleece from ? any good deals around ?Restarting C25K in 2014 - Week 8 - 1/3 completed

My OH built another raised bed today
We emptied the contents of one of the compost bins into it but we need way more soil/compost. He is going to build another one (maybe tomorrow) and also a 3 tier shelf for under the dining room window where we get the most sun. The bed he built today will be for my dwarf beans, peas and sweetcorn that I will plant after easter. Not sure what to plant in the smaller one he is building. Maybe leek? Maybe radishes? Something that doesn't need full sun anyway as it's in a more shaded area of the garden.
The 3 tier shelf will house the tomatoes/chillis/peppers once I get some larger pots to pot them into. I bought those 'plug-u-gro- ones in the end and have just potted onto 4 inch pots. I think I will leave them in these pots till after easter then start hardening them off in the daytime before potting into the bigger pots. Am grumpy I couldn't get some of the flower pots from morrisons as they would have been perfect to house them.
Had a squiz round the garden to see what was dead and stuff. Looks like the raspberrys we put in last year are completely deadHopefully the redcurrants will come back though. We cut the blackberrys completely back at the end of last year though so will have to see what we get.

Debating if im not too late of cucumbers outside. Anyone done them? ok?0 -
I started cucumbers inside in toilet roll holders a couple of weeks ago, so wouldn't think it is too late to start now, especially if you can put in a heated propagator to get them germinating quicker.0

It's still too early to start them outside. The air is barely breaking freezing. The soil (which takes a few weeks longer than the air to warm up) should be 5 at night.0
