Hi is it ok to join you?
I've never been a big gardener but me and my 6yr old DD planted some chilli seeds we were given and got 4 plants. I mentioned it in old style and thanks to zippychicks replies I have turned into a veg monster:o
So far, thanks to friends and freecycle we have dwarf beans, runner beans (I think) potatoes, strawberries, peppers, aubergines, carrots, tomatoes and lettuce and of course the chillis.
They all seem healthy enough but not very big. The runner beans are smaller than the dwarf beans and have loads of flowers on them. The chillis have very thin stalks and about 6 leaves each and the aubergines and peppers have no flowers and don't seem to have grown much since we got them.
Sorry for rambling, I am really new to this and really want it to go well for my DD.

Hey Long Term Lurker- Welcome to unlurking :rotfl:
If the runners have flowers on take a look soon for little teeny beans on them. Depending on where you are you may just be a bit behind. I know I am as I'm in Scotland! If you have a warm windowsill, you can bring in the chilli and the aubergines and peppers inside and self pollunate (using a paintbrush and brushing the flowers when they come) and that should bring them on. I grew tons in feb through this method like spinach and lettuce and they really came on that way! Imagine it being like a greenhouse LOL!
Have fun! Why not also try some salad leaves as they are very quick to grow and your DD will see things quickly or what about cress heads? A boiled egg hollowed out and a face drawn on it, stuffed with some cotton wool which has been dampened and then cress seeds added to make green troll hair? They were always fun as a kid!Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -

Thanks been a general lurker for a while:rotfl:
I will bring those in and put them on the kitchen windowsill. Have been trying for a greenhouse on freecycle but never manage it, they are so expensive new:eek:
It is salad leaves not lettuce we have (told you I was new to it;)) and they are doing well. DD is loving it and keeps having a sly nibble:T
We have done cress before but no one likes it so it ends up in the bin:( Didn't think of spinach. Thanks so much for your help. You learn to love to liveYou fight and you forgiveYou face the darkest nightJust live before you die0 -

I have two lots of potatoes - chitted, planted out, shored up, all the same times....
one was earlies... one was Maris Pipers.... I can't remember which ones i planted on which side of the spud patch!
can you tell just by looking at them? they tasted exactly the same - we had them for tea tonight, and i kept them seperate just for the taste test purpose lol......
blinking gorgeous if i do say so myself!
a Q re strawberries... if the 3rd year is the best year... do they have to have remained in the same position/pots etc as previous years? as mine are currently on year 2, position 3, and they've done rubbish... i was planning on moving them again (i don't think my tiered planter
has been very successful) after this summer... what do you think?
interestingly, just found this picture of the same strawberry planter when i "made" it, 9th April -
ok i'm all done pasting lol...
was sure i had another Q re something... can't think....
Here you go wobbledoos.... all of your img and /img tags were mixed up and some of the URL's were wrong....
Think I managed to rescue them all but may have deleted some by mistake....0 -

Green Tomatoes!!
Hello, another (probably silly) question from me.
I planted two tomato plants and kept them inside my consveratory. One grew well, but never flowered. The other one, much to my surprise & delight, did and I've got 3 tomatoes growing. But they are still green and have been there for about a month. When do they go red??!!
Its the same for my Tumbling Tom plant which is in a hanging basket outside. I've got about 13 tomatoes on that and loads of flowers but they are all still green too. I must admit I'm so pleased with myself that I've even managed to get this far. But it would be nice if I could have at least one turn red and eat it!!0 -
No idea Jo- but mine are the same so I wouldn't worry about it!
OK! I you would think I would learn!!! I planted out a load of seeds, except once again I can't remember what they were and didn't label them! I think they are all salad leaves but other than that who knows? Could I have sewn spinach? They all look the same at this stage. I have to say though, Atlas carrots are very good! I'm very pleased with them as they don't need deep rooted soil.
Is anyone else planning next year yet? I have a seed box and am picking up seeds as I see them on special offer or if they are a bit special to hoard away till February! However I am going to order my greenhouse in the next few weeks as the whole thing looks like it will take an age to put up and that wont be good to do if the weather is freezing. Also thinking about my garden move. I keep swapping things round to make it more pleasing to me but im still not satisfied!
Oh well! It will get there eventually!
Have a good day allFeb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790
