My pumpkin rotted but by the look of it the rot started in the flower. Quick google search makes me think the veg is rotting because it's not being pollinated (no male flowers open on mine at the time). Should get better as they come into sync more.
That's why I'm picking my courgettes now as they show until some males and females are out at the same time, rather have a bit of fun with the fried ones since they're tasty than chance it rotting.0 -
On the subject of salads, the greenly on mine just wash off under normal tap water. I then put the leaves into a salad spinner (2.50 from Tesco - bargain) and spin the life out of it so it's nice and dry to use in sandwiches and stuff.0

*sob* I have a poorly tomato plant. My tumbler which is in a hanging basket in the greenhouse (and sit right under the vent, and today against the wet glass), has got a leaf problem that I'm really hoping isn't blight, but I think it might be...
I've taken it out of the greenhouse for now to see what happens and I'll spray everything with bordeaux mix, but does anyone know if it is blight? Mummy to an amazing little girl0 -
Garnet lady, sorry I cant answer about blight. I had 2 plants that went like this a few weeks ago and I panicked and threw them away, pot soil and everything! I hope someone comes along and tells you its not blight, your hanging toms are lovely. I actually lost all but one tom from my greenhouse, the others I have left are the hanging ones outside. I think it just gets too humid in there for them even with the door open.DFW NERD NO.656 DEBT FREE 24TH NOVEMBER 2010 TOTAL DEBT AUGUST 2007 £39000MFiT T2 NO.56 WE OWN [STRIKE]25%[/STRIKE] 31.5% OF OUR HOUSE SO FAR!0

GarnetLady that looks like what I had a few weeks ago. All website told me it was a nutrient deficiency (can't remember which one). I fed them a lower concentrated mix twice a week and all bar the worst affected have recovered. The toms now look healthy and are flowering. Mine are Gardeners Delight but weren't flowering when I had the problem. But hey don't listen to me (don't want to be responsible lol) but it does look the same. I just wanted to try and reassure you.
Oh and the worst affected leaves on mine were the lower ones but as yours are tumbling in baskets that can't really be compared.0 -
lunar and ausmummy, thanks. Scary isn't it?
Been having a look online, but nothing looks the same. Been out for another look, plant is outside in quarantine, and none of the lower leaves or the stem seems affected, well so far anyway. I think I might have forgotten to feed that one when I did it last, hmm. There are also a few blackfly on it. Time will tell I suppose...
Problem is, it's really too cold up here to leave them out all the time. Rest of the plants look okay, inspected them, making sure my hands were scrubbed beforehand. Mummy to an amazing little girl0 -
GarnetLady - cold it be botrytis? It might be if it's just the leaves against the glass that are affected. I'd just cut off all the affected bits and see if the rest of the plant recovers.0

Got a quick question about tomatoes myself. I sowed some from seed a while ago, they didn't do too well, resowed and they came up but by then I'd bought my current main set.
The thing is I still have my grown from seed ones and they're between 6 inches and maybe a foot tall and just beginning to bloom. Is it actually worth me keeping them and maybe cutting off the top growth after 2 or 3 trusses have set or am I just too late now and should just leave them to have a nice life and die naturally.0 -
If they are starting to bloom I would say let them try and have a go at producing tomatoes. Some of mine are only now just blooming!
Good luck!Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790 -
I agree with wssla00 some of mine are only about 6 inches high and just started flowering.Sometimes not moving backwards is as much an achievement as moving forwards is on other times. (originally posted by kidcat)
It's only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway!0
