Hi ausmummy, I pulled up 2 and they had done nothing, looked just like the day I put them in the compost. Will hold tight. I put them in vertically, didn't know which way to do it so just guessed!

I think once they get going you'll be surprised at how fast grow (hopefully). I think it took about three week for my first ones which was about 6 week ago. The second ones I did only took just over a week which was, I think three week ago which have pretty much caught up to the first ones. My third lot was about a week. I'm germinated them in beer cans with the top and bottom cut off.

    Yes.

If you keep the plants well fed (tomato food) and watered, you will be giving them to strangers in the street. Don't be tempted to 'leave one until tomorrow to grow a bit bigger' they seem to grow inches overnight. Pick them small and enjoy them at their best.

We'll be speaking to you in a couple of months when you will be asking for recipes;)

i have about 7 courgette plants to plant! plus after reading various website seems like i need more room for these plus more more room for my runner bean plants. Looks like i will need to dig up my runner beans before they settle in from my raised bed and plant them on the side garden just to have room!
i found this website very useful

Right, any ideas on what to do with radishes? Was so chuffed that they were doing so well and now I'm drowning in the b*ggers!

Tomatoes going great guns - got my first teeny tiny tomato under the green bit that makes the spider on the full sized tomato! Some of the tomatoes have gotten away from me - I've been constantly watching for stems to pinch out but I've got more than one plant that's got two forks. Courgettes are also on a bid to conquer the greenhouse!

Peas also coming along nicely and I spotted a first flower on them today - the only problem is I built a chickenwire cage for them to grow along and I can't get into the middle of the cage to weed it out.... Onions flourishing and my indestructable (famous last words...)carrots are now quite substantial.

Planted out some squash and some more brocolli seeds at the weekend so hopefully they will be up soon now the weather is nicer!

We've also had lots of lovely rhubarb which is about to hit the freezer for crumbles and muffins. Weather forecast for the week is sun, sun and more sun!

I have sometimes planted courgettes just in front of the double row of runner beans. By that I mean there is no gap between them, so when picking the beans I am reaching over the courgettes. This saves space and they benefit from the copious watering in the trench down the centre of the bean poles.

i read that radishes are best eaten within a few days of being picked, and stored in the fridge. The leaves are bittery but can be eaten and i know someone who uses them in chutneys or mixed with other greens for peppery taste kicks!

I remember someone (apologies, I forgot who!) posted to say that their french beans from Dig-In weren't doing well ie only one had germinated. I sowed 6 hoping that at least 3 or 4 would germinate and low and behold I had one fine looking specimen poking through before too long and expected the rest to follow suit and thats been it.......... nothing else, not a bean :rotfl:

I'm rather disappointed - hows everyone elses doing?

You know I am on this website all the time but only just found the greenfingered bit!!. I am a total novice but have started growing all sorts of veg this year and already learned a fair bit reading the posts. Anyway I too planted my green beans from Dig In a couple of weeks ago. I planted eight and they are coming on a treat. I made the mistake of planting them all together in one tray but at the weekend re-planted them into separate pots and they are now in a cloche outside. The courgettes from Dig In are a bit of a disaster. I was on the Dig In website and now realised I planted the seeds upside down!! Doh! Was tempted to dig them back out and put them in the right way! Oh well, we'll see how they go!

I've enjoyed being in the garden today. Fortunately was well enough to extend my plastic raised beds ....they are the sort that a corner pin holds them together so to extend them you just add another plastic board and put a corner pin in...really easy, thankfully.

(Healthwise) I just couldn't garden if i didn't have the raised beds and everyone i have was either bought for me or bought heavily reduced, so i feel really fortunate. This being my first year growing fruit and veg, has been by far the most expensive...even though i have been gifted so much...but in subsequent years, i intend to make my fruit and veg growing as inexpensive as possible.

Over the last few weeks we have been slowly working on the beds and now i have 5 beds which measure 1 x 2 metres. I have plans for them all. Carrots and parsnips are in one, onions are in another...with room for lots of other stuff to grow in it, like more carrots....in another i will be planting my cabbage and cauliflower, in yet another, courgettes and aubergines, if they take.... and in the fifth bed, swede and turnip and i might put my beetroot in it too. I never would have thought of myself as a gardener, but this evening, i really didn;t want to come inside...it got too cool for me and i was very tired, so i had to...but i keep looking over what i have done and feel so proud of myself!

  • Silly question: If you eat the courgette flowers does that mean they don't turn into courgettes?
