How cool is this? A lady knocked at my door today selling garden manure. She had a truck with lots of bags on it, so I've asked for one bag for now, and it was only £2.50, and it's lovely rotted down compost manure (not just a big bag of poo)! She even put it on a trolley and wheeled it into my back garden. I never thought I'd be so happy with a sack of poop before! One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Planting cabbages out - do I plant at the same depth as they are in their pots ? I'm feeling inclined to plant a bit deeper as the stalks seem so splindly but worry this might rot them off. Anyone know please ?0

Hi everyone!
Thanks for your kind thoughts for the holiday. We were in Fife for 4 days and had a lovely time. I even managed to buy some plants. :rotfl:
I now have 2 cucumber plants to add to the rest of my veg. (I'm not a fan but dh and parents like them, so for £2 I thought I'd give it a go.)
Amazing to see the difference in my plants in just a short space of time! Broad beans are growing like mad, carrots, chives and lettuces are all coming on, my toms have had a spurt and my strawberries are flowering.
I think I tormented my dad a bit whilst I was away with instructions on feeding, watering and protecting from the cold.
Sorry to hear about plants dying/being attacked, it's really upsetting when it happens.
Elantan - So sorry to read about the burglary. Mummy to an amazing little girl0 -
I'm so excited I've got to share this!! My next door neighbour has a leylandi in her garden that is over 40 feet tall, it blocks a lot of afternoon sun out of my garden and is a total menace
Well just now another neighbour told me it's coming down tomorrow :j :j :j :j :j :j :j :j :j :j
I'll now have a lot more sunshine to grow my veg in and all those flowers I can now grow that will have sun for most of the day, yipeeeeee!!
(you can tell it's been the bane of my life for the 5 years I've been here can't you :rotfl:)

you can plant them slightly deeper but they like to be firmed in when planting. Dig hole, drop cabbage, use foot and press down. If you're planting in a pot, you need to buy a soil based compost and not use MPC0 -
Got in from work not long ago, asked oh to put my courgettes outside and lo and behold they are still inside!! I put them out like a flash to soak up as much sun as possible, got about 6 promising plants cos I like courgettes. My goodness they get big don't they....I have a raised bed that used to be a pond by the previous owners but full of rubble and rubbish basically, so not dug it over. May try putting one in there see how it goes and leave the rest in pots, just want as many courges as poss!!
Good news kimmeee more sunshine for the veggies!!
Garnetlady, hehe buying plants whilst on holiday, it will be a nice memento of your breakAhhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0 -
[QUOTE=Am I going to be drowning in a sea of courgettes by the summer?
[/QUOTE]
Yes.
If you keep the plants well fed (tomato food) and watered, you will be giving them to strangers in the street. Don't be tempted to 'leave one until tomorrow to grow a bit bigger' they seem to grow inches overnight. Pick them small and enjoy them at their best.
We'll be speaking to you in a couple of months when you will be asking for recipes;)0 -
Been a long time since I posted
Anyway stuff coming on quite well. My Lollo Rosso lettuce is ready to eat :T, my peas I planted in Oct/Nov have come on a treat and I have flowers on them now so roll on the peas :T, leeks doing OK, broccoli doing very well, raspberry canes have leaves sprouting, tomato plants need re-potting, courgette (I have about 6 of them ) are doing OK indoors (I lost a couple for some reason but that's no biggie), spring onions started to sprout, carrots doing well, sweet peppers need potting onOnly thing that hasn't done so well are my caulis - could only get 2 to germinate and they aren't looking so hot. Think I may have to buy them again this year.
Can't wait to start eating all this stuff
Oh for those of you who will be planting out your courgettes, make sure you heel them into the ground really well as I didn't last year and I lost a couple.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks
All will be well in the end. If it's not well, it's not the end.Be humble for you are made of earth. Be noble for you are made of stars0 -
I remember someone (apologies, I forgot who!) posted to say that their french beans from Dig-In weren't doing well ie only one had germinated. I sowed 6 hoping that at least 3 or 4 would germinate and low and behold I had one fine looking specimen poking through before too long and expected the rest to follow suit and thats been it.......... nothing else, not a bean :rotfl:
I'm rather disappointed - hows everyone elses doing?0
