I remember someone (apologies, I forgot who!) posted to say that their french beans from Dig-In weren't doing well ie only one had germinated. I sowed 6 hoping that at least 3 or 4 would germinate and low and behold I had one fine looking specimen poking through before too long and expected the rest to follow suit and thats been it.......... nothing else, not a bean :rotfl:
I'm rather disappointed - hows everyone elses doing?
Checked them about an hour ago, sod all after 2-3 weeks. Even pulled one out of the soil - not done a thing. It's been in my conservatory as welll!! Verryy disappointing! Had sown 7 as well.Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0 -

Oh for those of you who will be planting out your courgettes, make sure you heel them into the ground really well as I didn't last year and I lost a couple.
Mine are pretty floppy from the base, have squodged some more soil around to keep them upright, it's almost like they are brokeAhhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0 -
Four out of six of mine have started growing after 10 days, they look really good and healthy. Does anyone know how tall they grow - is it as high as runners and do you make a wigwam in the same way?0

Yeah mine were in my conservatory too - I've had so much success with everything else germinating it is really disappointing
I don't know how high they grow lolly but I was planning on growing them in a wigwam - will look bl**dy stupid with a wigwam of 1 :rotfl:0 -

Have just started growing stuff this year and since my back yard is concrete I'm stuck with pots.
Poundland has been a pretty good place for planters. £1 for a 12" square one which have been the mainstay. Morrisons had some of the discarded flower buckets in tonight (only 9" diameter so maybe small ones) so I got 32 of those. Finally my local Home Bargains store was selling those flexible buckets for £2.99 (they're massive - about 35 litres each) which I have decided to try the 3 sisters in with corn, beans and squash.
Have found that my old soldering iron makes great holes in the bottom of any plastic pot and I've yet to have one split on me. I just wipe it with a thick damp cloth when I'm done and the plastic residue just comes off cleanly.
Growing a lot for a newbie, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I figure I'll try everything I want this year and then I can ignore everything I fail on or don't want to do anymore next year.
Herbs (Parsley, Basil, Chives, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme and Dill) Veg (Beetroot, Carrots, Spinach, Cauli, Cabbage, Corn, Butternut Squash, Courgette, Pumpkin, Tomatoes, Garlic, Onion, Leek, Spring onion, Radish, Brocolli, Parsnip and Mixed Lettuce)0 -
I must be the only one over run with french beans. I have 26 at different stages as pretty much everyone of them germinated. I have two of those big 40 litre tubs from home bargains with canes and 9 plants in each (two to each cane and 1 in the middle. The rest are little. One of the tubs is going great guns with a few at about 3 feet and another 2 of them at the top of the canes at about 5 feet. I will be cutting the top of them ones tomorrow. These have been grown in my glass extension. I did loose about 3 from the soil being too wet when planted causing the seed to rot.
Those having problems have you had a gentle dig to see what the seed is doing? I know some people say leave alone but this is what I did when I wasn't sure and it didn't harm mine.0 -
My seeds from Digit have all done well - only planted 3 of each of courgettes, french beans and all came up - carrots doing well and 2 pots of salad leaves and basil coming on nicely
Am definitely addicted now - just bought a small spacesaver greenhouse from Argos for more tender plants as live in Highlands and not sure if tomatoes and courgettes would do well outside.0 -
Hi ausmummy, I pulled up 2 and they had done nothing, looked just like the day I put them in the compost. Will hold tight. I put them in vertically, didn't know which way to do it so just guessed!Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

Another plus for digin seeds. The carrot seeds are indestructable. My DD has dug them up and I've replanted about five times and they are still going strong. Now there leaves are about 5cm high despite DD's desire to kill them lol.0
