I do this too- can't help it, just a comment like "(kisses teeth) thats just greedy man!" and they normally stop and think. I can get quite childish if they don't react and walk off saying "who ate all the pies, who ate all the pies...." and have had people even trying to excuse themselves at the till with stories of how someone else took everything yesterday or how they had been waiting for ages or that they need it for the freezer.
Most of the time I don't really care, swiping all the reduced items when there is a heap of people says more then any excuse they make (and I normally have my earphones/mp3 on at the same time they are talking anyway)0 -
I always manage to fill my freezer with whoopsies, I just go round all 3 supermarkets. Then all my cupboard stuff comes from approved foods.0

Had some useful whoopsies recently from Tesco - lots of fruit which I've turned into pots of yummy jam. Rhubarb and ginger, blueberry and lemon and plum & peach. There seems to be a half-hour 'window' at around 8.30pm at my local Tesco, between them marking down and putting it on the reduced shelf, then marking down and putting them straight into their trolleys as wastage. Girlie last Saturday had a huge box of apples that she bagged up and put straight to waste - she wouldn't give me any as it was 'out of date', she said. Ridiculous, perfectly good fruit being thrown out!
So you win some, and you lose some.0 -
DH & I were in Mr T's with teenage DD, and were having a dig around in the reduced F&V.
DD was looking a little embarrassed ( hey, we're her parents, that's our job) and said 'You two are like a pair of raccoons'
I'm sure more sensitive souls would be mortified, but we found it hilarious :rotfl:DD was laughing with us, though, so I doubt she's scarred for life
Does it the bargain hunting bother your kids?0 -
Does it the bargain hunting bother your kids
Bargain hunting doesn't bother my DD at all in fact she's all for it as she know's too well that bargains
a/make mum happy
b/leaves extra money for other nice things
Now DH and coupon use are a different matter. When Tesco used to accept any coupons he would shop absolutely fine all round the shop but once the shopping was on the conveyor belt he was off and would wait at the door.
I tricked him once and told him I had none to use.Bless him he nearly passed out when I got them out of my purse in fact I felt quite guilty!!
On the whole though our household accept MSE ways as part of life as we do very nicely from it.There are girls at work who openely comment that they don't know how we afford the holidays we have(how rude!!) and yet when I try to share any MSE info with them
ie/ tesco giving free tomatoes+money off your shopping
they aren't interested. You just can't help some people.
Money saving is my hobby :T0 -
My sons didn't seem to notice & took it as normal. In fact DS1 did a kind of 'show & tell' to the rest of his primary class on how to make school shorts out of outgrown school trousers. I had been keeping that dodge quiet due to an extra-snobby school gate clique, but as the teacher told the class she was going to make her husband some shorts too, it passed smoothly. Now they drop by their local Co-op towards closing time to browse the 'reduced' shelf as a matter of course.
DD started her teenage years by being quite 'against' bargain hunting but after 4 years in Uni is now so 'for' it that she is arranging a 'thrifty' wedding!I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
My daughter loves it. In fact I've had to now do another order, my second this week - to get her couscous as I forgot it.
My son though, doesn't know I do it - I think he would be mortified.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.
