It varies with the manager of the department. I stopped using Tesco Crooksfoot Ashford when I heard the manageress telling the lad with the gun to mark all the salad as 1p then throw it straight in the bin. I asked the lad and he said it's mashed outside to stop it being salvaged and no I couldn't buy any of it. What a waste. I shop at Asda now who have some good bargains late in the evening, and only use Tesco for bogofs etc.

The problem is, the stores don't who is just buying the reduced items because they are reduced, and who came in to buy that item anyway. Then spotted one reduced so didn't need to buy one at full price.

Also, some people may buy a reduced item then not need to buy a full priced item. Example, you go in to get some lamb chops for tea, but spot some pork chops at a reduced price. So you grab the pork chops to have for tea and don't need to buy the lamb chops.

Reducing items to save them going in the bin may be a good idea, but it usually means they loose a full price sale either that day or at a later date. In the example above you may grab the pork chops because they are going cheap, then get the lamb chops because that is what you want for tea. But at some point you are going to think/say I don't need to buy anything for tea today because I've got the cheap pork chops in the freezer.

My local Tesco only ever reduce meat/fruit/tins/packets etc by 25% which really doesn't make it worth buying, you're saving so little I'd rather pay the extra 25% and have fresh food.

They do reduce the stuff in the bakery department by about 75% though which makes it a bit more worthwhile.

I find the smaller/town centre ones best. Regularly they knock stuff down to 80% off. I got a chicken for £1.30, hummous for 12p, rolls for 9p and pizza for 59p yesterday. When I go out of town to the bigger ones they knock stuff down from £1.99 to £1.49 which is rubbish IMO.
Complain about the manager's attitude and the waste that they have created. Tesco's are trying to be more eco-frindly and that is not good for the environment!

I think it varies from store to store, I thought it also was to do with closure time but from the OP's comment about 15 mins before closing, perhaps I am wrong.

Reason I think this is that my Tesco, which is 24-hour, never ever reduces anything by more than 50% and that is a huge rarity. Most of the stuff on the reduced shelves are a maximum of 25% off. Eg. today pizzas reduced from £3.50 to £2.65, yet the longer dated ones were available on 2 for £6 anyway, hardly a bargain!! Also stuff like Restaurant meals from £6 to £4.50, still not worth snapping up imo.

However my Mum's local Tesco, which closes at about 8 or 10pm, reduces stuff according to how near closing they are - eg. 2 hours before it will go to 50%, with 15 mins to go they reduce stuff down to 90% off!!! So she frequenly comes away with bags and bags of shopping for like a fiver! :)

What is the policy on Lidl and Aldi reduced stuff? Does anybody know?

Is it better to find a bargain in stores other than Lidl and Aldi?

As always cutting back not cutting out.

The Waitrose I visit with my mother keeps reduced price stuff where it was. This seems a much fairer way of doing reductions ie finding the unsmoked organic back bacon I normally pay 3.99 for reduced would be a nice surprise.

In ASDA there's a scrum over the reductions, it's too intimidating to get involved in.

Lidl doesn't do much organic food so I rarely go there but in the past I have seen reduced price cheese and yogurts.
