The daytripper ticket will do you if you stay in Strathclyde which includes both Ayr and Glasgow. When you go to Edinburgh that is a different area Lothian. The train is quite dear to Edinburgh from Glasgow about £21 but Mega bus does the journey also. Avoid rush hour times and it takes around 1hr. Rush hour can take forever. Might also be able to book train tickets right through in advance saving yourself some money. Both Edinburgh and Glasgow are worth a visit with lots to see for all ages.0

Both these look ideal, one is in Ayr and the other in Ardrossan both appear to be central and great for people without a car.0 -
when arriving at Glasgow airport you can get a taxi to Paisley Gilmour street and get the train to Ayr. I assume that would be cheaper than a taxi all the way to ayr.
For getting into Glasgow City from Ayr you'd probably want to get the train rather than the bus as its quicker.
To get to Edinburgh from Ayr unfortunatly you need to get the train to glasgow central. Then you need to get another train (leaves from glasgow queen street) or a bus (leaves from Buchannon street bus station). both are a 10 min walk from central station. As said above the glasgow edinburgh train is very high priced.0 -
Claire, you need to calculate:
- What you want to see/do in Scotland
- How much this will cost in entrance fees, etc.
- How much trains and buses to these places will cost from a main station
- How much it will cost you to get to there.
I think it would be a good idea to start a thread asking what people think the must see and do's in Central Scotland are in the month of October, make a shortlist and discuss with the family. Then plan an itinerary of sorts, then work out train/bus fares and entrance prices, then see how much you can spend on accomodation, and where you "need" to stay, to get the most bang for your buck!
I'll start you off with Glasgow.- One day shopping
- The Science Centre
- Art Gallery / Museum of Transport (free entry)
- Braehead (snowzone, cinema etc.)
- The Castle
- Camera Obscura
- The zoo?

Just to add to Jackie's post, the Transport Museum will be closed from April, but there's many other attractions:
http://www.citysightseeingglasgow.co.uk/bus-stops.html
If you click on the numbered bus stops, it tells you where you can get off and what you can see. Most of the places are free entry, and some have guided tours, ie the City Chambers. If you use the tour bus, the tickets last for 48 hours after purchase.
I don't know a lot about Edinburgh, but they have a lot of different bus tour routes, so that gives you plenty of places to get off and see. Tickets last 24 hours.0 -
I have just had some Tesco Club card points delivered - yippee!!!
Going to see if I can get a cheap/free day out for our trip.xxx.
Snowdome - 2 hours for the kids on the Monday0 -
Just to let everyone who has been following the thread:
Have found a beautiful apartment to rent that fits us all in (without the need of a broom cupboard) and is just in our price range - in the centre of Glasgow.
I'm paying the deposit today.
Many thanks for helping me.xx.

Is Glasgow International also known as Prestwick???
God, let me look at my online ticket to make sure.
Glasgow International Airport is the one nearest Glasgow (Renfew to be precise).
Glasgow Prestwick Airport is near Ayr (Prestwick is a wee town next to Ayr).
If you are coming Ryanair it is likely Glasgow Prestwick, but bmi baby am pretty sure it will be Glasgow International.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
