There are a couple of caravan parks based near prestwick airport, slightly north of Ayr, which means that they are really handy for the train station to Glasgow. Ayr, Prestwick and Troon are all served by the x77 bus which is the direct fast bus that goes straight up to Glasgow city centre. Trains run every 30mins, 20 mins in rush hours.
Largs is also a good place. On the sea, lots of holiday accomodation which will be cheap in October, and you can get off to places like Bute (Mount Stewart is wonderful etc) for day trips.0 -
Another alternative to consider as a base would be Stirling. Right in between Glasgow and Edinburgh, but also within reach of the Highlands, and a lovely place.0

Do you not have an airport code on your ticket. GLA is Glasgow, PIK is Prestwick0 -

Sorry to be a pain - for me the main page just came up - no single cottage.
Do you think we would need a car because we don't drive.0 -

The link works for me? I would email them and see how remote they are, I have seen alot of holiday cottages for about £300 - £350 but they look remote, Ayrshire is a rural area.
Try this link, its for the main page for cottages starting on 15 Oct.

the few I emailed with holiday-rentals were in Ayr itself - ok if we rely on public transport? Not sure about the ones that have village names.
