I used to carry drums of aspartame around on a truck. You wouldn't believe the safety precautions you have to take. It is poisonous in quantities.[strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!0

years ago i used to see a homeopath. and her opinion of what is in soft drinks was unprintable.
i am sure she said it was asparthame (???) that is put in drinks because it makes you thirsty and makes you want more.
maybe my memory is playing tricks but i am sure thats what she said.0 -

I'd take whatever a homeopath says with a huge pinch of salt! See my signature.
Aspartame is a sweetener that is cheaper and lower calorie than sugar, which is why it is used.
Monosodium Glutamate (E621) makes you thirsty. This is a cheap way of adding a savoury flavour (umami) to food. It is used in Packet Soups, Gravy powder, crisps and other foods. I try to reduce my consumption of this too......0 -
My Nan used to drink about 8-10 cups of tea a day, with 4 canderal (yes 4!!) in each cup. She died a few years back and the doctors said it looked liked aspartame poisoning. Obviously she had a high intake of it over the years though, personally I'd rather the sugar!!!!0

MSG is heavily used in Chinese takeaways. Mind you, I like that umami feeling...."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

Out of interest, what does aspartame poisoning look like?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
This really annoys me.. especially if there is a diet variant. If people want drink that tastes awful and is potentially bad for them then they should be able to choose to drink diet... I just want a nice tasty naturally sweetened drink though!
I no longer drink Fanta or tango and drink sunkist or orangina which tastes better anyway and I won't drink lilt or schweppes lemonade.0 -
Hold on a sec... before it was aspartame it was saccharine. Aspartame's the lesser of two evils if you ask me. Have they ditched the saccharine yet? That's why I stopped buying it.
If I want a fizzy drink, I want it with sugar in. If I want nasty sweeteners, I'll buy diet.My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
thanks for this, Im very sensitive to Aspartame (crippling tummy pains after barely a mouthful) and I had not realised it was in R Whites!0
